I was talking with the Chapters person in the Kiddie department, and they told me that Harry Potter readers ususally start around 10 years old.

I ended up getting my (soon to be 8 years old) nephew a few books from the Mr. Gum series. He is finally old enough to move from short stories to books with chapters in them.

Not sure where you li'l munchkin falls in the reading category, but the Mr. Gum series seemed fun. Have a lookey-loo online for it.

well...she reads at a grade 5/6 level...she's read the chronicles of narnia up to book 5 and the legend of holly claus, she's out grown animal ark...and we are waiting ofr book three of little fur to come out (it's a cool series about a half elf/troll girl who lives in a magickal forest inside a city very cool) so it's finding tougher reads but with young kid content that i'm looking into. so we are into the 9-12 age range for skill but the understanding (read innocence) of an 8 year old.

another good young chapter reader series is the magic treehouse by mary poep osborne my younger one loves them, he's 6 soon to be 7, he can't quite read them alone but loves to have them read to him or he'll read them with help. and a bit more advanced is the animal ark collection.

have fun buying cool books for your nephew!!!

I was (still am!) an avid reader at age 8 and I loved Nancy Drew books. I have read all of the Harry Potter series and absolutely loved it but you may want to wait a couple of years on those just due to the length and comprehension. I have never read the Golden Compass or Spiderwick stuff so I can't help you there. I did a search on Amazon.com with the word "children's" and they give a link to a search to what they call "middle readers" age 9 to 12. There was a ton of stuff there. There is a series out called American Girls that she might like, a movie came out recently from the series, Kitt Kittredge or something. My mom just bought the Guinness book of world records book for my 10 year old nephew and the whole family loved it including my 8 year old nephew. She got him the Ripley's Believe it or Not book for Christmas. They are big books with lots of photographs of amazing things with the stories in them. Big Squeezy hugs! Love ya! -PA

Harry Potter is fine for all ages that can understand the words.

His Dark Materials... I might hold off on that for another coupla years. Some of the fight/post-fight scenes aren't quite 'graphic', but the scene in (I think) the 3rd book where the Pansarbjorn Iorek eats his dead friend (it's okay, he's a bear?) might prove a tad troubling to some little-uns.

Not had any experience with the Spiderwich chronicles
