Not having read the book (although it looks interesting), I might amend that fanatical religion is a philosophical rather than a mental thing - mental can mean a lot in this context.

Right, I perceived as much. I would argue that it's both logical and philosophical, with use probably depending which means you want to use to achieve your ends.
