CLUTCH!!!!!

Nobody gave the poor St. Louis Cards a chance.  They had the worst record of any team ever to go to the world series.  They were an NL team.  They had been in free fall most of september.  Detroit would shred them.  USA Today predicted Detroit would win the series in three games.

Whatever.

THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!

congrats! i guess the demolition of the previous busch stadium wiped away the stain of the sweep by the red sox in the '04 series, heh.

meanwhile, when did you become a seamhead?

I'm only a seamhead, really, when the Cards make it to post season-play. Granted, thats been 3 years in a row, but I really only get into it during the NLCS and world series.

The sweep was tough, but I was kinda rooting for the Sox in that one, especially after punishing the Yankees so cruelly like that. How could you not root for Boston in that scenario. (I also thought a Boston victory would intangibly help the Kerry campaign against bush) The Sox were a very very streaky team that year, and I knew after winning 4 straight to get out of the ALCS, they would prolly keep winning for awhile.

In baseball, the home team always takes the bottom of each inning and the visitor always takes the top. So if the home team is winning after the top of the 9th is over, the game is over. The bottom of the 9th is pretty much just for if the game is tied or the home team is behind.

dude, just kidding. however, it is a bit of a jip, I mean you pay for 9 innings, you should get a full 9 innings of entertainment.

i'm responding here since your response came up anonymous -- not sure if i respond on that thread that you shall see it.

anyway, pretty cool you follow the cards, we have more common ground for jock-assing it up now -- and we can scorch some LJ threads with NL/AL debates. though i've learned to love small ball with the nats now here in d.c.

didn't mean to dis the STL, just had a soft spot for motown since they tooled the yankees earlier in the ALDS -- my dad called me in utter ecstacy when detroit beat new york, in my family our sports passions sometimes flow stronger towards hatemongering. i'm still trying to figure out the third piece of my unholy sports anti-trinity to go with the yankees and the dallas cowboys. any suggestions? maybe UVA? i can gin up some bile for them.

Been thinking about this now and then for a bit.

I Think Va Tech/Florida State is a good one. We will likely be facing off with each other for the ACC Coastal. I usually root firmly against UT Longhorns, I can't stand that University, but I did kinda root for them last year against USC.

BTW, do you have a firm posture on "arguably the greatest rivalry in US sports?" I know yer thinking "Boston/New York", which is a strong contender, but the /other/ big rivalry in US sports.....

If so, were you happy or sad about yesterday's outcome? The other two you mentioned are also

I'm embarrassed to not know enough about basketball to be able to choose in a rivalry.

did you mean miami in the coastal? fla. state is in the other division -- or do you mean meeting fla. state in the acc championship game frequently, like we did last year? that could develop nicely -- especially since we have yet to beat them in three tries dating back to the natl. championship in double-zero ( ... )

either one. Miami is a decent rivalry for the coastal, but FSU is the one I really hate, and yeah, I meant FSU for the ACC champ ( ... )
