it's so impossible to tell what cubans or any people want, but especially cubans since the place has been an ideological football for so long. i just worry that post-fidel and post-raul (no spring chicken either), the crazy miami contingent begins their reconqista, flashing shiny baubles and it's back to mafia-town south -- no disrespect meant to the intelligence of cubans either, but money has a way of peeling people off.

also, hopefully the cautionary tale of the russian wild wild east in the '90s will provide cubans with ammo to counter any chicago school evangelicals who may flood the zone in any opening of relations.

I should re-phrase: "What they report, and what I have long suspected, is that a substantial and significant portion of Cubans seem to take the position "fuck the US, fuck Capitalism, fuck Castro and authoritarianism".

indeed about Raul's age, the miami reconqista, the russian wild wild east, etc.

who knows how things will go down in Cuba? I just know the place has been confounding Uncle Sam and Uncle Sam Gianncanna since '59

(actually, I'm guessing Trafficante was closest to Havana in '58)

yeah, santo and sam were tight, along with meyer lansky (aka "hymen roth" played by lee strasburg in "godfather ii"). ya know, "that whole bay of bigs thing."

i would imagine if any organized crime were to retake havana, it would be some of the mexican cartels and/or ms-13, in cahoots with the miami gang, of course.
