Last night we saw the Lyric’s production of Boris Godunov.* It was okay. There were some definite highlights: the coronation scene and its mirror, when the Russian people surround Godunov to demand bread rather than praise him, were both great musically, and mostly staged well. Rocky is clearly a trouser role (as he was in the cartoon), and Bullwinkle is, of course, a bass. They both try to break into the Kremlin several times, but only Boris sees them, making Natasha and the boyars think he is hallucinating.
