Scary Mother's Day

May 11, 2009 13:22

Sean and I were at my mom's in Indiantown, FL. We'd seen a smoke plume earlier in the day and had gone to investigate. We found a brush fire south of town, being tended to by firefighters, and it appeared to be more or less under control ( Read more... )

Eeek. I hope your Mom and her house are ok.

You know, people ask me all the time about the safety of living in New York. Well, even pre-Giuliani when there was a lot of crime, I still didn't have to deal with wild fires, hurricanes, tornados or earthquakes. The occasional storms (rain or snow) are manageable, and about the worst thing I have to worry about are blackouts (three in 45 years).

Yeah, we do pay a price to live in Paradise. Mom's house is okay and there have been heavy rains for the past two days, so most of it is out. Here's a link to a local rag:

Isn't this something? After you read about those three little miscreants who started all of this, click on the link that says View brush fire Staff Photos, then pick the gallery of staff pix from May 12, the one with the firefighter all in yellow holding a shovel. You'll see pictures of the one house in her development that was "destroyed." It wasn't, actually, but I imagine they treat these manufactured homes the same as they would a car. It's essentially totaled, even though only part of the home was burned. They'd never go in and repair one of these. They're basically double-wide trailers, although they are not on wheels. They're secured to the ground and have all the amenities such as sheds and carports and patios added. Really quite nice for what they are. They'd burn like crazy, though, if a wildfire really raged through there ( ... )

Okay, that chocolate cake you sent home with Kurt is $#^&ing AMAZING. You made that??? I can't even do box mixes because they flatten and burn. I had some of it and it was so good that I actually managed to fall asleep for a couple of hours, haha, and probably wouldn't slept through the night but I had to get up and feed the cats. Your chocolate cake cures insomnia! Thank you!!!

Yeah, I made it. Every crumb of it. What a mess! Not sure if I'll ever do it again, but it was really good, wasn't it. To begin with, it called for cocoa powder dissolved in boiling water, then set aside to cool. I managed to spill half of that all over the counter and had to re-measure to replace what I'd lost. The rest of the cake part was just a question of tons of ingredients, but no further mishaps. Then came the frosting. I had to put my mixer in the dining room, because the kitchen counter was all covered up with lunchmeat, etc. The frosting is a sort of butter cream, which meant creaming butter into half of the powdered sugar and more cocoa powder. Well, even on low speed, the dry stuff went everywhere. I had to put a towel over the mixer to keep it more or less in the bowl. Then, when it finally creamed up, I had to add MORE dry ingredients. It was all over the mixer, the floor, I don't know how people do this. And I had to leave at 4:30 to go get my mom in Indiantown, so I frosted the cake and then just... left ( ... )
