„I’m home.“
He gripped the bag of groceries tighter as he shut the door from the inside, slipping off his shoes at the entrance.
Silence.
Wasn’t this a little weird? He had gotten so used to the liveliness that had taken over their new place in the last few months that the total lack of noise right now made it seems almost eerie. Not even the dogs came running to greet him like they usually did when he came home.
Maybe they had gone for a walk? The weather was nice enough this afternoon.
He parked the bag on the counter in the kitchen and shuffled over towards the living room, stopping at the door and leaning against the door frame.
So they obviously hadn’t gone out…
One arm was wrapped around her small frame almost protectively while the other hung loosely off the side of the couch. His head had sunken down towards his chest to where her head was resting, his mouth slightly open as usual. It was an expression he had always found endearing about the other even though it probably looked ridiculous to most. Her tiny hand was gripping the collar of his shirt in her sleep, the white of the fabric almost glowing in the soft light that the sun was casting through the window. But maybe that was just his imagination.
Both dogs were lying on the floor next to the couch as if to protect their precious family from any intruders. Then maybe all the little wooden zoo animals that they had gotten her for her first birthday and that were now lying around everywhere were supposed to be working as landmines, too.
Hachi cracked one eye open as he stepped into the room carefully. He put a finger to his lips and after a moment of silent understanding she rested her head back on her paws, drifting back off into sleep.
As it was him who stayed home with her more often, this was a rare moment to witness and he didn’t want to disturb it. He got his cellphone out of the pocket of his jacket while he slowly sneaked closer.
Her small, round head really did look a little like a peach like they had been joking in the beginning though now it was covered in fine, dark hair that was growing so fast that he couldn’t wait to tie it into cute little pigtails.
Making sure to mute the sound of the camera, he held up his phone to snatch a picture of the scene in front of him. First a wide-angle shot to fit them all in and then a few close-ups. They looked so peaceful. How he would have loved to just curl up next to them but as the couch wasn’t that big and he didn’t want to wake them, he decided to sit down between both dogs, his back resting against the couch. Carefully moving the other’s arm which was still hanging down over the couch, he draped it over his lap and lightly snuggled into his side. He’d probably get uncomfortable sitting like this after a while but right now it was perfect. So he closed his eyes, listening to the soft snoring drifting down from the couch and Satsu’s occasional snuffling as he himself slowly drifted off into a light slumber.
