Recently, I feel like I want to write more proper journal more often. Because everyone would probably know about this so I’m trying to write this as good as I can.
Most of you, I’m pretty sure, are using Microsoft Windows as default Operating System for your PC/Laptop, no? so here I write the story about Microsoft Windows Development History since its first time appearance. Please note that I’m gonna use OS instead of Operating System itself- (for you who don’t know any idea about Operating System go
here or
here)
The story was begun in 1975 when Bill Gates and Paul Allen formed a partnership named Microsoft. Then in 1980 Gates and Allen hired their ex-classmate, Steve Ballmer to help run the company. The main focus was the software that run the hardware and also cut the gap between computer hardware and software. Also being the foundation for other software computer to operate. For example like word processor.
1. MS. DOS (June 1980)
Finally the new hero in computer was born, MS-DOS. MS stands for Microsoft and DOS stands for Disk Operating System. Also it doesn’t have Windows as name.
This OS wasn’t popular in our generation, which is mostly exposed by at least Ms. 98, but for you who still get this type of OS in high school would be familiar with this kind of command “ C:/”. You may have heard about Lotus or WS? That are some of software that run on MS-DOS. Most people think this is too hard to understand so that Microsoft developed the newer version OS which is more user friendly
2. Windows 1.0 (November 20, 1985)
Then, Microsoft developed on the new version of OS where you can ponting the icon with your mouse instead of typing the commands. The name Windows was used because after clicking the icon you can work on the workplace which is look like a windows. Think about it yourself ;P
Some improvisations were made during its development. Drop-down menus, scroll bars, dialog boxes, plus its ability to not have to quit the program you run to switch to other software. MS‑DOS file management, Paint, Windows Writer, Notepad, Calculator, and a calendar, card file, and clock are invented for the first time. There is even a game: Reversi.
Windows 1.0 requires a minimum of 256 kilobytes (KB), two double-sided floppy disk drives, and a graphics adapter card. A hard disk and 512 KB memory is recommended for running multiple programs .
3. Windows 2.0 (December 9, 1987)
Windows 2.0 is almost the same with Windows 1.0 only with expanded memory and desktop icon. Improvisation in graphic support allows you to overlap windows, control the screen layout, and use keyboard shortcut. Control Panel was also invented in this version Windows.
4. Windows 3.0 (May 22, 1990)
Windows 3.0, followed shortly with Windows 3.1 was totally a big hit at that time. They sell 10 million copies in the first two years. So far this is the widely used Windows. Windows 3.0 comes with better performance, 16-bit graphic colors, and improved icons. Program Manager, File Manager, and Printer Manager are invented in this version Windows. More games were also arrived in this version, makin it increasingly used at home and work.
Technically speaking, Windows 3.0 comes with software development kit which was made it more popular amongst the software developer. This SDK thing helps software developer to focus only on writing program.
5. Windows NT
Windows NT was released on July 27, 1993. Before it was being released under Microsoft license, it was actually a join program between IBM and Microsoft. Windows NT is a 32-bit OS which supports high-end engineering and scientific program (at that time, I guess ;p).
In the future Windows NT, will be the basic platform for many Microsoft OS.
So this is the first part, i decided to split it into 2 part, just to make it easily read. The next i'm going to start with the new invension which is we can not live with, i'm pretty sure you know :D untill next part~
