The more communication there is, the less effort you put in. The effort increases proportional to the square root of the reward (a large increase in reward does not lead to as large an increase in effort). No communication and the effort does not exist. If there is a disincentive, the effort does not exist.

Reward = Effort² x Communication
Thus:
Effort = sqrt(Reward/Communication)
