Yesterday, after his Robotics class, I told Beekman we were going to pick up some nuts before we went home. He was VERY invested in going home for screentime, either TV or gaming on the tablet, so he did not want to go. I'm with the "he wasn't shrieking and screaming so you did well" crowd. I've had to weigh my options, as you did, between being polite to others and teaching a lesson to my child. I believe that "being polite to others" is a lesson the child must learn in order to function in society, so my solution would have been slightly different than yours - but then, my children were slightly different than yours, too, so who am I to judge your method against mine? (I would have waiting with the sobbing child in the car until the tears were silenced. But I could count on my child calming down and listening to why we weren't yet going in the store or going home, so I had an advantage I don't think your son has given you yet.)
