Little feet padding down the hallway; that’s what wakes me up this morning; it’s the same way every time he’s away. Ordinarily, he’s the early riser; wakes our little girl and takes her down for breakfast.

But when he’s away, she’s the one who does the early rising; she’s the one who wakes me up.

“Daddy it’s time to get up.”

First things first, tug, tug on the quilt, making me glad I had enough foresight to wear pyjamas when he’s away. I lift my body up, wrapping my arms round her waist and pulling her down on top of me, tickling her all over and delighting in the soft giggles coming from her.

“Daddystopit.” All her words come out in a tumble through her giggles and she’s got happy tears rolling down her face and god, I wish this moment could last forever but there are things we’ve both got to do today.

I kiss both of her little cheeks and she pokes her tongue out at me, wiping the spots I kissed.

“I love you, Daddy but kisses spread cooties and I don’t want that.”

There’s such an earnest expression on her face, it’s hard for me to hold my laughter in but I manage it and reply with a nod and smile. Once her giggles cease, she’s tugging at the blankets again and poking me in the hip. I huff and pretend to be angry with her, pouting and poking my tongue out but she just giggles.

“Don’t be silly Daddy; you don’t get mad at Natalie.”

I raise an eyebrow at her; she knows she’s right. I find it almost impossible to stay mad at her for even a second; Travis is the authoritarian not me thus, this past month she’s gotten away with all kinds of murder including the “decorating” of her bedroom. An idea she swears came from Lily Walker, the most angelic looking devil you’re ever likely to meet.

I scoop Natalie’s small body up and onto my shoulders, clambering into the bedroom next to the one I share with Travis where I’m greeted by the quiet coos of our two-year old son Ben. I put Natalie on the floor and I scoop him up, cooing and blowing raspberries on his belly before placing him on my hip.

There’s a knock on the door downstairs and before I can even tell her not to, Natalie’s down the stairs and opening the door. I hear her squeal so I know it’s not any sort of danger.

I softly pad my way downstairs; Ben desperately trying to grab at my hair. When I reach the door, my heart drops and I step forward, getting enveloped in a hug from a person I’d missed so much.

“You said you weren’t going to be home till Wednesday.” I mumble into his shirt, drinking in the essence of him.

“Two shows were postponed due to weather conditions.” He smiles into my hair, one hand playing with the hem of my pyjama shorts. It’s a moment that feels like it could last forever but in a house with two needy children, it can’t and the moment ends with the growl of Natalie’s stomach.

“Can I have breakfast now, Daddy?”

So this is pretty much the first thing I've ever written for other people to read.Just a drabble but I hope you enjoy.
