REFERENCE: AU HISTORY

This AU is based on Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00, which was purely fictional in canon but for this poor Mikuru, really happened. However, since said Episode's attempt at plot was hastily and poorly done, I have attempted to flesh out Mikuru's back story.

Mikuru was just an ordinary if very shy girl until her sixteenth birthday, when she received a cosplay cafe waitress costume as a joke birthday present from one of her friends and, upon reluctantly trying it on, came into her powers of time travel. This seemed at first to be an accident: She found herself experiencing deja vu or checking newspapers that weren't supposed to be around yet, but she eventually managed to find her way back to her own timeframe.

The jumping stopped when she changed out of the waitress outfit, leading Mikuru to ask her friend where she had gotten it. Her investigation brought her to a second hand shop, where, behind where the waitress outfit had hung, Mikuru found a letter addressed to her and began to read it. This mysterious letter detailed the use of her Mikuru Beam (immediately trying this, Mikuru lasered a rack in the second hand shop and collected up everything that fell off it and tried to pay it off) and jumping, how to use her time traveling abilities more effectively, and, most importantly, her mission: She was really a battle waitress known as Miracle Mikuru, and she had to protect a young man named Itsuki Koizumi, an ESPer, from the forces of evil aliens who were out to steal his powers and possibly take over the world along the way.

However, the letter urged her to protect this young man at his most vulnerable, before his powers manifested. This happened to be in his first year of high school, which happened to be several years into the past. Believing this immediately and eager to help out, Miracle Mikuru memorized the letter's instructions, tucked it into her maid outfit, and leapt back through time.

The following history is a bit of a mix of the anime (dub) and the light novel. Mikuru is referred to as both plain Mikuru and Miracle Mikuru as an indication of which identity she was under at the time, or, in other words, whether or not she had her maid outfit on. Though the name Miracle Mikuru is never used within the canon story itself, it is derived from the theme song.

And thus Miracle Mikuru arrived in Itsuki's first year of high school. To support herself whilst in the past, she took up two part time jobs attracting customers to local shops by standing in front of them wearing a bunny girl outfit, holding up signs, and shrieking about the great deals and the owners' sob stories. Impressed by her hard work, the president of the shopping district council, Yuusuke Suzuki, gave her a home in a small bedroom above his stationery store. In this small shopping district she could keep an eye on Itsuki from afar, as he went through the area on the way to and from school every day.

But this peace could not last. Soon, Miracle Mikuru ran through some flying pidgeons for no reason and found herself in a forest park, staring down one Yuki Nagato, an alien witch bent on taking Itsuki's powers. Though Miracle Mikuru shot bravely, Yuki swept her bullets away with her magic powers, forcing Miracle Mikuru to use her Mikuru Beam. But alas, the beam didn't work on Yuki: The alien witch moved at inhuman speed to cover Miracle Mikuru's eye and tackle her to the ground.

Yet Yuki released Mikuru to fight another day, and Mikuru went home trying to come up with another plan to stop the alien witch. Unfortunately she couldn't think of anything, and ended up just getting changed to go to work. But on the way, she stumbled upon Itsuki being attacked by Yuki. She couldn't have this! Tackling Itsuki out of the way of Yuki's Star Ring Inferno's laser, she hurt herself running into a pole, but at least Itsuki was okay. Yuki retreated for now, leaving Mikuru alone with Itsuki for the first time. When Itsuki asked who she was, she waved the question off as her being "just a bunny girl passing by", and made her exit.

After another quiet period, Miracle Mikuru and Yuki fought again by a pond. This time Yuki brought along three high school students, including a friend of Mikuru's who knew about her mission, Tsuruya, and controlled all three of them with psychic waves from her wand. Miracle Mikuru urged them to come to their senses, but they simply could not control themselves, and, powerless to hurt innocents, Miracle Mikuru was tossed into the pond. As she flailed about in the water, Yuki left with her temporary minions, making a great opening for Itsuki to come along and pull Miracle Mikuru out of the water. Itsuki tried to check on her, but alas, tired from her struggle in the water due to her inability to swim, Miracle Mikuru fainted into his arms.

Itsuki carried Miracle Mikuru home, bathed her, and put her to bed. Though he was about to kiss her in her sleep, he was interrupted by none other than Yuki. Mikuru slept on while Itsuki and Yuki engaged in some incomprehensible exposition that knocked on the fourth wall. By the time she woke up, Yuki was gone. Though Miracle Mikuru was initially embarrassed by the situation she found herself in, she soon realized this was the perfect position for her to keep an eye on Itsuki and protect him from Yuki, and thus she moved in with him permanently. Between her part time jobs advertising the local shops, she began to take care of the housework around Itsuki's house, as well as his abruptly introduced eleven-year-old sister and, oddly, Shamisen, a cat that had previously been seen clinging to Yuki's shoulder. But she questioned none of this, happy to look after Itsuki.

This too did not last: Yuki transferred into Itsuki's high school in an attempt to steal his heart instead of stealing his powers by force. As she began to stalk him, write him love letters, and give him free food, Mikuru, feeling threatened, also transferred into Itsuki's high school, and the two fought via conventional rather than laser means for Itsuki's heart. Mikuru was particularly surprised when Yuki threw her arms around Itsuki one day. Realizing this was all rather silly, Miracle Mikuru and Yuki eventually returned to fighting with their powers as Itsuki did not make a decision. Itsuki's nameless little sister and Shamisen looked on as the two mortal enemies fought bravely in school, in Itsuki's house, and around town.

Mikuru is taken from these shenanigans rather than from the end of her adventures. However, this does not explain the initial letter, so I shall go on...

One day, Mikuru found a letter from Yuki in her shoe locker, challenging her to put an end to these shenanigans. With the encouragement of Tsuruya, Miracle Mikuru set off for her final battle on the school's roof during their lunch break. Though their previous battles had strengthened her Mikuru Beam to the point that she could shoot not only lasers but also missiles and mini black holes from her eyes, Yuki was still able to simply dispel them with her wand. The fireworks of battle drew an audience, embarrassing Miracle Mikuru deeply, and allowing Yuki to easily back the battle waitress to the edge of the roof. Yuki bid her farewell and cast a powerful spell on her with many strong lasers. Miracle Mikuru could do nothing but shriek in pain.

Luckily Itsuki soon showed up, getting Miracle Mikuru out of the way of this attack and urging Yuki not to hurt the poor girl. Shamisen, Yuki's (or was he Itsuki's?) cat, suddenly advised Yuki aloud to simply enslave Itsuki's mind with her magical powers, but Yuki wrote this off as ventriloquism, before taking this excellent advice. However Itsuki's hidden ESP was finally awakened by this, and Itsuki instinctively reflected Yuki's magic back onto her and blast her into the far ends of the universe, saving Miracle Mikuru. With Yuki gone, Mikuru and Itsuki could finally be together in peace.

Here's that promised fanon explanation:
As Mikuru grew up with and eventually married Itsuki, she came to realize that Miracle Mikuru was no longer needed. Donating the maid costume to a second hand shop, she realized that the letter that had sent her back in time had been from herself. She wrote the letter and hid it behind the dress, thus creating a predestination paradox: She made herself travel back in time and take on the mantle of Miracle Mikuru. And then she lived happily ever after, occasionally watching her younger self grow up.
