Title: Birthday Plans

Summary: It's Naoya's birthday and Sota has plans.
I really like Kime. He’s a very good friend of mine since we’ve got to know each other through Tenimyu and spending time with him is always fun but today I hate him. He ruined everything! With one little text message everything I had planned for weeks just went out of the window.
“Tonight surprise party at Naoya’s place. Everything’s fixed and we’ll all meet in front of his house at 8:30. Bring snacks.”
In any other situation I’d be glad to see everybody again because our last reunion-party already was a couple of months ago and having the whole crazy bunch together is always great but not today.
I should have seen it coming though. Kime likes throwing birthday parties even though I always wonder how he finds the time. Eiji probably helped, too (and Tuti generously volunteered to buy drinks..)
Maybe I should have just told them about my own plans. But that would have meant telling them about.. us. And I’m not sure if I’m ready for that yet.
Sometimes I think they all know anyway. They probably knew before we did. It must have been so obvious and thinking about it now, I feel so stupid for not realising sooner who I had in front of me all this time. But on the other hand, realising it at all makes me happier than I have ever been in my life and it’s all your fault.
When I arrive, everybody’s there already smiling mischievously and waving with big bright balloons while Nagayan tries his best to keep Tuti quiet. This is supposed to be a surprise party after all.
“What’s in that box?”
Kime’s smile gets even wider.
“It’s a cake.”
“But it’s huge!”
“Maybe I’ve put a stripper into it. Nao-chan could use some fun once in a while.”
I’m glad that it’s already fairly dark outside because I can feel my cheeks flushing slightly.
Tuti’s laugh echoes through the dark street.
“He’d just run away screaming like a girl.”
“At least he doesn’t dress like one..”
Eiji and Tuti look at each other for a moment and shrug.
“Jealous..”
Kime’s eyes narrow.
“Will you shut up now? He’ll notice us and the whole surprise is gonna be ruined.”
It’s only a hiss but it works immediately.
“Sorry”
Everybody helps to get the huge cake in front of the door and then we take our positions while Nagayan rings the bell.
A moment later the door opens and there you stand trying to look surprised even though I can definitely see a little chuckle tugging at the corners of your mouth.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!”
You blush and look a little embarrassed even though I’m pretty sure you’ve been watching us through your window all this time. Right now I want to kiss you so bad but try my best to hold back the urge and go for a regular hug instead though it lingers on a little longer than those of the others.
Then it’s time to open your presents and we all sit down in the living room. Your couch reminds me of the last time we met. It’s really cosy and soft. Almost as soft as your lips. Damn it, concentrate!
You open one present after the other and there are “Aaaaww~s” and cheers and roars of laughter when Tuti presents you with a little book on “Dog Horoscopes” paired with a bottle of Whiskey.
I’m last and everybody turns towards me with expectant faces.
“So what did you bring, Sota?”
“Maybe he forgot..”
“I bet it’s this month’s Shonen Jump”
“That would be so lame!”
“He mixed an Inui Juice Birthday Deluxe!”
I hand you a square parcel which I hastily wrapped this afternoon. I think it shows, too.
“Happy Birthday”
You give me the sweetest smile but I can’t bear the look on your face for too long because I feel so stupid.
“Come on, open it already so we can start with the cake!”
“Cake?”
“Thank you so much Tsuchiya-san. This was supposed to be a surprise, you idiot!”
Kime gives him a slap on the head and the whole round erupts into laughter again while Tuti pretends to cry into Nagayan’s shirt.
“Now now... he didn’t mean it. But if you stain my favourite shirt you’ll regret it.”
I’m actually quite happy about all the commotion because it distracts everybody’s attention away from my gift. It’s a CD. An album of a band you told me about a couple of weeks ago.
“You once said you like them. I hope you didn’t buy it yourself by now. I still have the receipt though. You could exchange it for something else.”
You put your hand on mine and squeeze it affectionately. The warm touch sends goose bumps all over my arm.
“I can’t believe you remembered that. Thank you so much”
A short discussion about the newest developments in the musical industry evolves until Eiji interrupts and points to the still unopened box that is standing in the middle of the room.
“Now that you know what it is, maybe we could have some of it. I didn’t have dinner tonight.”
Your eyes grow wide at the sight of the huge cake filled with chocolate cream and when Kime lights the 27 candles the glowing of their flames reflects in them and makes them sparkle.
We all sing “Happy Birthday” and finally everybody can dig into the delicious desert. Unfortunately some of it ends up on the floor when Tuti tries feeding Nagayan while laughing about on of Eiji’s jokes.
When the drinks are served the mood gets even more silly. There’s a round of charades and Nagayan proves that he can burp the chorus of “You got game” which makes Kime nearly wet his pants.
I hold back on the drinking and try to check my watch as inconspicuously as possible. It’s already past three. Are they ever gonna leave? I hope this isn’t one of these sleep over-parties.
As Tuti slowly dozes off on the couch, my hopes sink considerably but then Kime gets up with wobbly knees and announces that now it’s time for everybody to go home and leave Naoya with all the cleaning up.
Maybe it’s just his tipsiness but I think he gives me a little wink. And maybe I don’t really hate him after all..
It still takes a while to get all of them out of the house but when you finally close the door behind you with a sigh I still sit on the couch waiting for you. You slump down next to me with closed eyes and a happy smile on your face. I study your expression for a while which looks so peaceful and just plain beautiful.
There’s a moment of comfortable silence while I run my fingers through your soft, dark hair.
“Are you gonna kiss me at all tonight?”
“What??”
You give a little chuckle when you notice the surprised tone in my voice.
“Just kidding. The party was great and everything but I thought they’d never leave. I’ve been longing to have some time alone with you all night.”
You open your eyes and the longing that reflects in them makes me gulp.
“Me too.. Listen, I’m so sorry.. I wanted to-“
I can’t finish the sentence because your lips are pressed onto mine and I immediately forget everything I wanted to say.
My arms wander around your back and pull you closer towards me. Feeling you this close makes my heart ache, but in a good way. I nuzzle at the skin on your neck and suck in the smell that is just so typically you and that always makes my heart flutter with joy.
“I hate to be apart from you for so long.”
That comment stings and I heave a little sigh.
“It’s my fault. I’m sorry. I was so busy in the last couple of weeks.”
“It’s okay.. you were busy with work.”
I sit up straight and you give me a questioning look.
“What’s wrong?”
I finger around in the pockets of my pants and finally get my hands on the little parcel that has been patiently waiting inside there all night. Now its big moment has finally arrived and I hand it to you.
“I almost forgot. This is the present I really wanted to give you. And I had planned a really nice evening for just the two of us. You know with dinner and candles and everything but then.. well, you know what happened then.”
“You..? Really..? I mean.. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Because it was supposed to be a surprise. Now open it.”
The look on your face when you open the little box and take out the silver bracelet completely makes up for all the worries I went through today.
“They’re all little four-leaf clovers. This is so.. Sota, I-”
“I was busy with work but this actually took up most of my time. A friend of mine designs jewellery and so I asked him to help me with this. I even melted the silver and everything. That was pretty cool. I just hope it fits you. I also stole one of your watches to get the right size. Come on, I’ll help you to put it on.”
When I put the bracelet around your slender wrist there are tears running down your face.
“Ah don’t cry. It fits perfectly, see?”
“…so.. pretty...”
I pull you into my arms again and you rest your head against my chest sniffling quietly.
“Happy Birthday, Nao-chan.”
