Summary: There's a difference between being alone and being lonely.
„Doing paper cranes again?“
Okada looked up from the silver piece of bubble gum wrap he’d just been toying with and right into Nagase’s grinning face. Giving nothing more than a nod he turned back to his work and smoothed down the folded material in front of him. Not waiting for an invitation Nagase sat down on the seat next to him and put a bottle of beer onto the counter before taking a sip from his own.
They sat in silence for a while, Okada fumbling with the delicate neck of the crane and Nagase watching him while slightly nodding his head to the rhythm of the music around them.
“Did you want anything, Nagase-san? I can’t concentrate when you’re staring at me like that.”
From the corner of his eyes he could see the other man grinning even wider.
“I’m making you nervous, huh? Ah yes, I sometimes have that effect on people. And didn’t I tell you to stop calling me that? We’re friends, aren’t we? Call me by my first name for God’s sake.”
Okada tried to hide the smirk that was tugging at the corner of his mouth but failed. Of course he was a good actor and very skilled at hiding his emotions from others but something about that guy made it impossible to keep up the wall that he usually build around himself for protection.
“You’re still a senpai …, senpai. And you didn’t answer my question.”
Nagase knitted his eyebrows and thoughtfully scratched the stubble on his chin.
“You already forgot the question, didn’t you? Idiot.”
“You know about my low concentration span, right? And you’re not supposed to talk to a senpai like that, Okada-kun. Anyway… Mabo was saying how you looked a little lonely back there so I thought I’d come over and cheer you up. Look, I even brought you a beer.”
As to emphasize his point, he picked up the bottle that was already leaving a wet trace on the table and held it dangling in front of the other’s face. Okada reached out, took the beer and put it back down next to him. Nagase stuck out his lower lip and gave a little pout.
“Thanks. I’m not lonely though. You know, there’s a difference between being alone and being lonely. Being lonely means you miss the company of others. Being alone just means you’re on your own. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.”
“You’re so deep, man. But still a bit of an oddball.”
“Apparently, that’s not enough to scare you away.”
Nagase pulled him closer and started ruffling his hair affectionately. Okada’s useless resistance just made him chuckle even more and his still free arm sneaked around the smaller man’s waist.
“Of course not! In fact I’d like to spend even more time with you. Why don’t you come over to my place next time we’ve both got a day off? We could go skateboarding again. You still have that board I gave you a while ago, right?”
“I do and… will you stop? That tickles!”
The long fingers stopped moving but still kept resting on his side. Okada let them be without another word because he knew that is was no use anyway. Nagase didn’t care too much about other people’s personal space when he got into cuddling mode.
“I bet you haven’t used it once, you couch potato!”
“I have, too! I use it almost every day.”
That answer just earned him an unbelieving snort and another dig in the ribs.
“Honestly! I sit on it all the time. I put it in my living room and sometimes I roll from the TV over to the window and look outside. It’s awesome.”
Nagase frowned and eyed him for a moment before bursting into a hearty laugh that almost knocked him off his chair. His eyes were already a little teary when he finally managed to speak again.
“And you know what the worst thing is? I actually believe that you really do that.”
“At least it doesn’t get dusty that way.”
Okada couldn’t help but chuckle when Nagase rolled his eyes in mock desperation.
“As the older and wiser-“
Cough.
“…as your senpai, let me tell you that filling your lungs with a little fresh air once in a while is really good for your health.”
“I don’t know how serious I can take an advice like that coming from a notorious chain smoker.”
“Rude…”
“Senpai?”
“Hm?”
“Here.”
With that Okada took his hand turning the palm upwards and placed the finished paper crane on top of it before getting up from his chair. Ignoring Nagase’s surprised look he took his beer from the counter and turned to leave.
“I think Ken-chan looks awfully tipsy back there. I’ll better make sure he gets home safely.”
Walking off already he turned his head back halfway exposing the little smirk that was lingering on his lips.
“Just mail me your schedule for next week and I’ll work something out. I’ll bring my camera so I hope you’ll provide me with some rememberable falls.”
Still a little dumbstruck Nagase watched him leave but soon enough his face lit up and he started to hum a little melody under his breath while contentedly sipping the last drops of his beer.
You just had to love that snarky little bastard.
