So I'm currently saving up for the MSF course. Once I pass it I'm going to buy a bike. I've been looking at new bikes. At first I said I would never own a new bike right off the bat...but the thought of not needing to fix anything as soon as I get it, and for the first time owning a new vehicle, and a WARRANTY!! So here's the question, in your ( Read more... )

I think it is beyond idiotic to buy a new bike as your first bike. 1. You will drop it, several times, no doubt. 2. You will get tired and want to upgrade sooner than you think, no matter how much you love it, or how much you doubt ever wanting a bigger bike. Get something as cheep as possible that you can really mess about with. Then buy yourself a new bike. My 2 cents.

I've been going back and forth with the same question myself. After looking at insurance quotes I decided to go with an older bike, because if I were paying the insurance and the payments on a new bike I would never eat anything but ramen again, at least until I graduate. :)

First, the big rukus is a scooter, not a motorcycle depsite it's displacement. (not sayin' it wouldn't be fun to bomb around on, but it's not the same and would limit your riding growth toward bigger bikes down the road)

Second, while I think a ninja EX250 is a GREAT beginner bike, and is a decent enough bike for even someone as big as I am (was) to have fun roadracing ( see http://www.garyratherphoto.com/AFM/2003/SP_Mar03/race_07/0303_2100.JPG ), buying one new is silly. That model hasn't changed since 1988.

Good ninja 250's can be had for 1500-2000 and will be worth that (providing you don't total it) when you're ready to sell it as well.

lemme know if you do go the used route, as I'd be happy to inspect the bike before you buy. I know that bike REALLY well and can verify all the normal problems those bikes can have aren't issues.

Thanks! yeah I'm really looking at a used Ninja 250. But the Big Rukus just looks sooo fun! I'm not going to be ready to buy until I've taken the MSF course. And even then I don't have the money now. the ONLY good thing to getting a new bike is the fact that with my credit and 0 down I'd only be paying about $45 a month. Now that I can handle.
