Title: Married For A Purpose
Rating: PG-13
Length: Chaptered
Pairing; KyuMin (girl!Min) and some ninjas
Genre: Romance(?), IDK
Summary: A reunion, a kiss and a breakup leads to a 'pretend' marriage between Sungmin and Kyuhyun. Now trying to get Kyuhyun's ex jealous, problems surface when Sungmin falls for Kyuhyun and Seohyun actually wants Kyuhyun back.

It’s been just over a week since they shared that kiss and thing have gone from awkward, which is Kyuhyun seeing Sungmin wet and naked, to even more awkward. They see each other here and there and just barely acknowledge each other’s presence before turning away hurriedly, a blush creeping up their cheeks as they recall the embarrassing moments.

“Hey Kyu, come over here for a second.” Kyuhyun turned to his label mate, Donghae, gesturing for him to come closer. He approached the man cautiously for Donghae was a rather famous practical joker and they had to be on their toes when around him.

“Do you think Sungmin will like this?” He asked showing Kyuhyun a pink box with a small bunny inside.

“Um yeah I guess. Why are you asking me this?” Kyuhyun asked while Donghae’s jaw dropped in shock.

“You can’t have forgotten such an important occasion.”

“What do you mean? What’s the important occasion?”

“Today is Sungmin’s birthday party.”

“Oh that. Pshh .Of course I knew that.” Kyuhyun waved Donghae off. “Who told you that anyway?”

“You know who Eunhyuk is?”

“The one you secretly bang in the janitor’s closet when you think no one is around?”

“How did you know?!” Donghae’s face turned bright red. “Anyway she was the one who reminded me. Oh look at the time; I have a schedule now so see ya.”

With that the man ran off and Kyuhyun swore he must have broken a record of some sort. But now he had a bigger problem. On top of the fact that Sungmin and him weren’t exactly on speaking terms thanks to a certain Kim Ryeowook and her (not so) magnificent mistletoe plan, he now had to give Sungmin a birthday present.

Hell, he didn’t even know what to get her.

It seemed so simple when they were younger. On Christmas, Kyuhyun gave her a stuffed rabbit while dressed in a Santa Claus outfit even though he was obviously too short. On Sungmin’s birthday, Kyuhyun gave her a stuffed rabbit together with a slice of cake. Basically Kyuhyun gave Sungmin a stuffed rabbit for every other occasion until Sungmin, despite her love for stuffed rabbits, began to complain. “I can open a stuffed rabbit museum with all of them.” She used to say.

“CUT!!! Kyuhyun! Quit daydreaming and start reciting your lines! Once more from the top!” the director’s scream snapped Kyuhyun out of his thoughts and he bowed a few times before they resumed acting. Seohyun, who just so happened to be the main female lead, snuck him a concerned smile before continuing with her lines.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?!” Seohyun screamed, slamming the table. “Do you think this is some game between us? I love you so much I’m willing to throw away my life for you so why? Do you know how painful it is to be kept in the dark? Can you feel the pain I feel? Why aren’t you saying anything? I thought you loved me but it looks like I’m just a blind fool after all, fire and ice can’t be together right?”

“Don’t say that. You know that whatever I do I do it for you. I don’t want to see you cry.” Kyuhyun said in a flat monotonous voice causing the director to cringe inside.

“CUT! CUT! CUT! Everyone take five. Kyuhyun come here for a second.” The director motioned for Kyuhyun to move closer. “Kyuhyun where’s the emotion? You need to feel it. Imagine if you had to leave Sungmin for a long period of time but she was looking forward to something special and you couldn’t bring yourself to tell her but she found out anyways. Are you getting the feel yet?”

Kyuhyun nodded without actually listening to whatever the director was telling him. In his mind a million and one gift ideas were surfacing but all of them were being turned down. A stuffed rabbit? She already has one too many besides Donghae got her one already. StarCraft 2? That sounds like something Kyuhyun himself would want for a birthday present. A hand phone? Sungmin isn’t that into technology and she just bought herself an iPhone not too long ago. Why is it so damn hard?

Before Kyuhyun knew it their five minutes break was over. “Are you sure you’re ok?” Seohyun asked worry evident in her voice. In this situation Kyuhyun should be jumping over the moon but instead he gave her a small nod and went back to thinking.

He tried to get ideas from the set. There was nothing in the kitchen he could give Sungmin seeing as the girl couldn’t cook to save her life. Kyuhyun didn’t think Sungmin would be very interested in dresses or handbags either. That girl is one of those who wouldn’t mind strolling out of the house in her pajamas. Come on memory. Something, anything. What did Sungmin use to like?

“Don’t say that. You know that whatever I do I do it for you. I don’t want to see you cry.” Kyuhyun said voice still flat and the director wanted to slam his head against the wall.

“CUUUUT!!!!!!!!! Let’s wrap up for the day. Kyuhyun take a long rest tonight, I expect a great performance from you tomorrow this crap just won’t do.” The director screamed before storming out of the set, assistants in tow.

“Oppa are you sure you’re ok? You seem kind of… off.” Seohyun approached Kyuhyun as they were on their way to their respective dressing rooms.

“I’m fine just a little tired. Can I ask you a question? Say it was your birthday tomorrow, what would you like your boyfriend to get you?

Seohyun was taken aback by the question but she answered anyway. “Well, I would like my boyfriend to get me something that is quite long lasting and expensive of course.” As expected from Seohyun. That totally didn’t help him at all.

Kyuhyun was getting ready to leave the studio when he saw Eunhyuk running around getting clothes. She was a stylist after all. Kyuhyun decided to ask her the same question.

“Me? Oh I wouldn’t really mind anything. As long as he bought with love. Let me guess, you still haven’t got Sungmin her present yet.” Eunhyuk finished her answer with a mocking tone.

“Y-yeah… But you promise not to tell anyone and I won’t say anything about what you and Donghae do in the janitor’s closet all the time.”

Eunhyuk stuck her tongue out at him and continued running down the hallway with a mountain load of dresses. Eunhyuk wouldn’t tell a soul even if he hadn’t threatened her but threatening made it much more fun. And why would Eunhyuk need so many dresses anyway? Wasn’t she Donghae’s stylist? Kyuhyun shrugged it off and went shopping with twenty bodyguards behind him.

Anything as long as it’s bought with his love. Well that’s extremely romantic and all but Sungmin and Kyuhyun were never really in love to begin with. Something that’s expensive and long-lasting. Diamonds or precious stones, Kyuhyun guessed. But giving Sungmin a precious stone was useless apart from the fact that she doesn’t wear any jewelry, she was once given a ruby that somehow found its way into the trash bin without Sungmin even knowing.

Kyuhyun strolled down the streets passing shop after shop but nothing seemed to fit his description of a perfect gift. Walking further down the road he saw a small cardboard box placed outside a pet shop. Inside was a small chocolate brown kitten with one blue eye and one green one that was meowing as it tried to claw its way out of the box.

“Kyu come take a look at this.” Eight year old Sungmin called to her best friend. Kyuhyun was pulled down to the same level as Sungmin while she was pointing to something black and furry on the floor.

It was a kitten lying in a pool of its own blood with scratches covering almost every inch of its body. “What happened to it?” Sungmin asked as she gently picked the poor thing up trying not to hit any of its injuries.

Kyuhyun shrugs and suggested that they brought it to the vet which they eventually did after getting lost in the city for a good half hour. It took another half an hour or so before they registered the poor animal at the reception counter. Apparently a couple of eight year old kids registering an injured animal without parent’s supervision were highly suspicious.

“Why would anyone want to hurt a kitten?” Sungmin asked as the vet was bandaging the kitten’s paw.

“You’d be surprised.” The vet simply replied. “We should call your parents to come pick you up. Do you know your parent’s numbers?” Sungmin and Kyuhyun nodded and in a matter of minutes a car pulled up in front of the vet as two hysterical women came dashing out followed by two men.

“The two of you nearly gave us a heart attack! What do you think you’re doing going to the vet without telling us first? Do you know how worried we were?” The women scooped their children into their arms and ‘scolded’ them.

“Umma, could we keep it?” Kyuhyun and Sungmin asked their parents in unison. It still shocked the four adults how two people who were not even related could be so in sync. The looked at each other and then to their kids who beamed back at them.

“Well, I guess we could…” Mrs. Lee started hesitantly. “But the two of you have to take full responsibility for it.”

Kyuhyun and Sungmin nodded but their happiness was short lived when they found out the cat couldn’t leave the vet yet since it was way too injured.

Kyuhyun woke up to see Sungmin tiptoeing out of their shared room. “Sungmin what are you doing?” Sungmin tuned around immediately and shushed her best friend.

“I’m going to visit the kitten. Do you want to come?” Sungmin whispered to Kyuhyun who was still half asleep.

“But umma and appa won’t be too happy.” Kyuhyun reasoned going back to sleep. Sungmin just muttered a soft ‘fine’ and snuck out of their room. She just barely made it to the hallway when she was stopped by Mrs. And Mr. Cho who were eyeing her suspiciously.

“I was just going to the toilet.” She lied and turned back to the room.

“We know you want to see the kitten so here.” Mr. Cho raised the cage which contained the black kitten. Sungmin squealed loud enough to wake up half the block and cause her parents to rush from their apartment next door to the Cho’s.

“What do you mean it ran away?” Sungmin asked for the third time still not believing what she heard.

“Well when I say it ran away. It simply means it ran away. There are no hidden meanings whatsoever.” Kyuhyun snapped his patience wearing thin as he answered his best friend’s question for the third time.

Sungmin looked down at the basket on the floor where a black cat should be lying in. “I guess it would run away.” She said softly as she made her way to her bed. “We pretty much suck at taking care of it.”

“On the bright side we took care of it for four years by ourselves. That’s a big accomplishment, right?” Sungmin barely nodded before collapsing onto her bed and drifting to sleep. Sungmin wasn’t one to cry. Anyone who knew her would know that.

Sungmin didn’t cry when she fell down two flights of steps. Sungmin didn’t cry when she was bullied by the head girl of the school. But this time Kyuhyun was certain he saw tears fall and he never wanted Sungmin to cry ever again.

#

“Excuse me but you’ve been staring at Kyumin there for quite some time now. May I help you?” A rather plump lady asked him.

“Kyumin?” The lady pointed towards the brown kitten in the cardboard box. “Oh is it for sale?” Kyuhyun asked again.

The lady nodded. “Are you sure you want it? It’s eyes are in strange colours though it isn’t due to any illness nobody really wants it.”

“No I’ll take it. How much is it.” He pulled out several thousand won from his wallet, paid the lady and left with the kitten sitting snuggly in the box.

Happy Birthday to You
Happy Birthday to You
Happy Birthday to Sungmin
Happy Birthday to You

A small group of about eight people sang for her once she stepped out of the room. “Hey Sungmin we’ve prepared a special dance item for you.” Eunhyuk and Donghae exclaimed excitedly before proceeding to dance to Donghae’s new song.

“Hey that’s self-promotion.” Yesung called out trying to stop the couple from dancing by singing another song really loud. Eunhyuk and Donghae changed their choreography to suit the new song and Yesung decided to change it again.

Shindong thought it’d be fun to join in and started popping away to whatever random beats Yesung was throwing at them. For a cook he sure can dance.

Kibum, Ryeowook and a guy Sungmin has never seen before in her life named Siwon, chose to remain sane as they ate the food calmly, ignoring the chaos around them.

Kyuhyun was observing everything and occasionally trying to start a conversation with Sungmin. “So I did really badly during the filming for the new drama today. What’s new in your life?”

“Nothing really I just applied some makeup on you, had lunch with Eunhyuk and came home. I did try pumpkin noodles for the first time though, it was nice.”

And a very long silent pause. Soon they just couldn’t take it anymore and went to join the three in random dancing.

#

“Oh we need to go now.” Eunhyuk and Donghae got up after eating some cake.

“I need to go too.” Yesung announced checking his watch.

“Me too.” Ryeowook piped in and Siwon just followed the four out of the house. Shindong smiled at the heaps of leftover cake he could help them finish. Kibum rolled her eyes and started to pack up. It was 11:47, just awhile more and it will be Sungmin’s official birthday but Kyuhyun can’t help but feel like he’s forgotten something. He got the present, they threw an awesome party but something just wasn’t right.

Sungmin disappeared into her room right after the party ended stunning Kyuhyun. Sungmin was always excited about her birthday. Always. “I can’t wait to see what surprises they’ll come up with during this year’s fireworks display. Anyway we’ll be able to see the pretty lights decorating the night sky.” Kibum suddenly sighed while she was clearing some plates.

“Ah yeah sure whatever. What’s with girls and fireworks anyway? They aren’t that pretty.” Shindong said taking another bite of the chocolate cake.

“Wait, what did you say Kibum? Fireworks?”

“Don’t you remember young master? Every year at twelve on New Year’s Day they’ll have a fireworks display near our mansion.”

Something clicked in Kyuhyun’s mind as he raced to Sungmin’s room. As awkward as their relationship was now, he still couldn’t turn a blind eye to the situation. Kyuhyun finally remembered the one thing Sungmin never liked about her birthday, because every year at twelve no matter where you are in the world there would be fireworks. And if there’s one thing Sungmin is afraid of, it’s fireworks.

Kyuhyun found Sungmin curled up into a ball in the cupboard. Before either of them could say anything, the clock struck twelve and the fireworks were lit. A small spark flying into the sky before exploding into a shower of colour and slowly disappearing.

Sungmin jumped at the sound and buried her face into Kyuhyun’s chest completely forgetting the unmemorable events on Christmas. Kyuhyun hated his seeing his best friend like this. She was always the strong one, the fearless one who was incapable of shedding tears but Sungmin was in fact a human with many flaws.

There are many things she cannot do even though there is an equal amount of things she can. Fireworks scare her and losing precious things make her cry. And then there’s Kyuhyun who hates moments like these because it make him feel useless and stupid.

More and more fireworks were lit. Beautiful displays of every colour imaginable, well not to Sungmin that is. She hugged Kyuhyun tighter with every firework and soon tears had formed in her eyes and trickled down her cheeks.

“It’s ok.” Kyuhyun patted her gently, trying to soothe her like how he always did. “It’s ok.” He would say over and over until the fireworks finally stopped.

Sungmin detached herself from Kyuhyun and gave him a weak smile as a form of thanks. Kyuhyun got the message; they weren’t best friends for nothing. He carried Sungmin to her bed and laid her down, brushing away some loose strands of hair in the process.

When he turned to leave, Sungmin grabbed his shirt and looked at him hopefully. “Could you sleep with me tonight?” she asked unsure if time has changed her best friend’s views about sleeping in the same bed as a girl.

Much to her relief Kyuhyun crawled under the bed. It’s been a while since she had someone to sleep with and Sungmin had forgotten how comforting it felt as she easily fell asleep.

A/N: I'm too lazy to go italic parts so I'm not sure if there'll be confusion but there is a flashback. There are mistakes hidden everywhere since I'm too tired to go look. comments are still appreciated even though I respond at the speed of a turtle.

By the way if anyone who does collab fics see this, when you do a collab, who posts the chapters. I mean if both of you post it, some peoples friends page will get spammed, right? Especially when x-posted to other communities. Just curious.
