Okkkkkay. So I got some stuff from Glee for Santana in the last couple of weeks.
- Santana's heritage is actually Dominican rather than Puerto Rican. If she's ever mentioned anything other than "I'm hispanic" (IE more specifics) in threads, please ignore that. She obviously said Dominican.
- Santana probably actually knows Spanish? The show is incredibly inconsistent on this, but I'll go with "yes."
- Her grandmother is a LARGE part of why she acts the way she did. It's implied that her grandmother has had an extremely difficult life, and as a result, she tends to carry herself very strongly. Rachel informed me that some of this really does tie back to normal traditions of Dominican families, especially given how difficult it is to live there. Whether Glee did that intentionally or not is up in the air, but a lot of her same values and beliefs are close.
- Her parents are okay with her being gay, but they're not on-screen for it. Her grandmother, however, IS on-screen. Her grandmother was the big deal, so I am assuming she was a big part of Santana's life and identity. It makes sense due to the construction of a stronger identity from a bottom up and the obsessiveness with keeping that going. These are natural extrapolations, but I do think that's what the show was going for. (I hope. It's Glee.)
- I knew this already (or, well, just assumed), but Santana was definitely raised Catholic. It was just confirmed. However, given her apathetic approach to religion in ... the happy religious episode yay, I think she doesn't align herself too closely with it. Or at all.
- Santana is capable of being nudged into heavy, heavy, heavy dere but you need to WORK REALLY HARD AT IT. And honestly, people don't in camp, because why would you bother. But this is here for that reason. In case it ever happens, Santana can be REALLY DERE.
also, this is the saddest scene in the ep, but look at how beautiful Santana is:
