In the novels Horatio is a very complex character and he is also an idealist, but he does not seem to be a Feeler in the Jung way of putting it. Horatio believes in fighting against Napoleon because he believes in liberty and feels that Napoleon is a tyrant who wants to end personal liberty. This is why he gives so much of himself to his Naval career and puts it above all else.
To Maria this is folly and she also thinks that her more pragmatic view on life is because she is a woman and that being so makes her superior. Any person would not be able to love a person who dismissed their core values so completely as Maria dismisses Horatio's.
