get out the blankets

Holy heating costs! For the past three months, our heating (gas) bill has been $270 and change. Ugh. For those of you who heat with oil, what is the cost of a gallon of heating oil these days and how fast do you go though, say, 100 or 250 gallons?

Well, so between Dec 15 and Jan 15, when it was freezing and snowy, we used 150 gallons of oil for our 2-bedroom (badly insulated) apartment, keeping it at 63 most of the time when we're home and awake and 58 while we're at work and asleep. Last year, when the weather was milder, we used about half that amount over the same time period. (Also, our hot water is heated by oil; we have one boiler for our faucets and steam heat.)

You can find some rate information here:

And the Mass Dept. of Energy puts out some information too.

I think my last bill was around $2.99/gallon.

Our usages are apples and oranges. I have more space and heat water with oil, but the thermostat is at 55 unless I'm home and awake. There's no meaningful conversion, so let's not go there.
