I disagree with all of you. Jhumpa Lahiri's writing about the ordinariness of it all. The meaningless way in which events just follow one another and people pretending they're preserving some meaning or adding some meaning to their lives but there just not being any. Sara, didn't you feel sad reading The Namesake? Aside from the cheating and sex with each other, don't you see how similar their lives are with ours. The big cultural gap between the parents who want to preserve "bangaliness" even though they're in a foreign land. They end up botching it up because their version of bangaliness is different from bangaliness back home too! And the kids get dragged to dawats and milads and what not and they could give a fuck about these sort of things. They just do it because the parents told them too. Here's the kicker, once our parents are gone, do you think you'll ever give a milad or do something traditional like the parents did? I doubt it. Maybe it's because I lived away from the parents for a while that I see how Gogol's ( ... )

well i can see wher ur coming from chanchal, but i feel like our parents are still more bangufied. like our parents would never throw christmas parties, and then they have bf/gf's and they are cool with it, so even if in a way we could relate to them, we still couldnt. i dunno it was weird.
but abt the writing style, maybe thats why i finished it, because ive got limited vocab, but because it was easy to read, i could read it without hesitation. like i said before, i cant be definite abt what i think abt the book. but i liked gogol, even if his character was not anything special.
abt god of small things, i had to pay SO much attention to it, cuz sumtimes i didnt get it, cuz im dumb. but i did like it i must say.

No, God of Small Things is just too cryptic. And I don't consider myself dumb for not getting her stupid nuances here and there. She was just smoking something really fucked when she wrote it. hehe... Either way, I don't like her style. Rohinton Mistry's style was gooood. Maybe I think like him. Janina...
