Considering what a sentitive and litigious society we have become, some of what the MTA gets away with is really miraculous. A jagged sidewalk can be grounds for a lawsuit, and yet the death trap you described is considered a fact of life on the NY city subway system.
Bug infestations at hospitals make national news, and yet the rats that you can see swarming any night of the week on subway platforms don't raise an eyebrow.
Passengers being stuck at airport terminals overnight make news and lead to massive apologies and customer refunds, and yet Subway conductors think little of stopping trains in the middle of tunnels with hundreds of trapped passengers for hours because they "thought they saw something" in the tunnel.
If you haven't noticed... I really hate the NYC subway system.
