One of the things I asked Mike to consider getting me this Christmas is some iTunes money so I can get a few new songs for my collection. With that I mind, I am putting the names of 5 artists I have been enjoying listening to lately in the hopes that anyone who wants to will reply with a similar list of their own in the comments. Of course, if ( Read more... )

Lately I've been listening to:
Carrie Cheron [a local-to-me-artist whom I expect isn't on iTunes] -- esp. "Goodnight, Amelia," "Untitled Song About Drinking Alone," "Autumn," "A Rainy Night"
Jeffrey Foucault -- esp. "Ghost Repeater" and "Battle Hymn (of the College Dropout Farmhand)"
Tom McRae -- esp. "For the Restless" and "The Girl Who Falls Downstairs"
Thea Gilmore -- esp. "This Girl Is Taking Bets" and "Down to Nowhere"
And a combo fifth: The New Pornographers -- favorites: "These Are the Fables" and "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras" -- and Immaculate Machine -- favorites: "Statue" and "Broken Ship"

I've become obsessed with the songs "Colorblind" and "Einstein on the Beach" by the Counting Crows, "Good Thing" by Reel Big Fish, "Let it Be Me" by the Indigo Girls (especially that one), and various old-school Simon&Garfunkel, especially "The Only Living Boy in New York."

And in general, my favorite bands are Switchfoot and Relient K when they are not being ridiculous.

I think we listen to completely different kinds of music, but I'm a big fan of nineties shoegazing music, like My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Autumns, Slowdive, etc. MBV is probably my favorite, especially their album Loveless.

Don't forget classics that you don't own either! There's 40 or so years of great rock music out there. =D

Oh! Do you like Low? selfish and I think they're just awesome! My favorite albums of theirs are Things We Lost in the Fire and their newest, The Great Destroyer, but all of them are good. I suggest trying out "Sunflower" or maybe "In Metal" (from Things We Lost...), "La La La Song" and "Last Snowstorm of the Year" (from Trust), "California" (from The Great Destroyer), and definitely "Sunshine" (from I Could Live in Hope EP), which is a heart-wrenchingly depressive version of the lullaby.
