Personality: Axel’s a bit of an odd duck, sometimes confusing to talk to and trickier to understand. If you don’t really pique his interest, he can come across as a very boring, all round uncaring guy. This is simply because he won’t go out of his way to entertain you, or even really make an effort to hold up his side of a conversation. In fact, even when he’s intrigued or entertained by someone for whatever reason, Axel still doesn’t open himself up entirely. Instead, he hides behind a facade of snark, one so brilliantly deceptive thanks in part to the fact that it seeps into his true personality, making it easier for him to play pretend.
It honestly amuses him to get a reaction out of people with hearts, so he might just mess around with others for that purpose alone. However, Axel’s not above using people to his advantage and might also be gauging everything somebody says or does just in case it will be helpful to him later on. Basically, if you’re not important to him? He doesn’t give a toss about your feelings.
Those who are ‘fortunate’ enough to be closer to him- which isn’t a lot of people- see the kinder, more affectionate side of him, which developed more when he met and befriended Roxas and began to feel his own emotions. That didn’t stop him from messing with people, though- he just makes sure it doesn’t affect Roxas or anyone else he comes to care about. He can also be very overprotective of those he likes, as shown by the way he defended both Roxas and Xion and tried to protect them. Even if it meant going to extremes, or lying to them about what was happening, Axel tried to keep them safe- and he tried to keep things easier for himself.
Loyalty isn’t something Axel hands over easily, so the few things that receive it- his friends, his plans with Saix in the Organisation- received it whole-heartedly. Ahahaha, pun! He was happy to take on the role of unofficial mentor for both Roxas and Xion in her time as part of the Organisation, and used the position as both an opportunity to show off his knowledge and to simply help and instruct the two of them.
Overall, he’s pretty darn sarcastic most of the time. When it comes to mocking himself regarding his apparent lack of emotions- which he does quite often- the sarcasm grows a subtly bitter undertone, as Axel does wish for a heart. Of course he does.
Abilities: As a Nobody, Axel has the ability to open dark corridors which can be used as a means of transportation from one place to another. He also specialises in fire-based attacks and wields weapons called chakrams- which are closer in nature to wind and fire wheels.
Axel is able to set his chakrams alight- whether they are in his hands at the time or in mid-air- and then proceeds to either slash and stab at his opponent or throw the chakrams- which he can summon back to his side at any given time. As seen in his fight with Roxas in the mansion (KH II), Axel is also able to summon large amounts of fire and bend them to his will.
Being a nobody means he shouldn’t have the ability to feel emotions, but prolonged exposure to and close contact with Sora/Roxas’ heart began to give him feelings of some description. In addition, Axel hasn’t really died, he’s just faded into nothingness. ‘Naminé, however, backs up this notion in the written novel of the game in which she mentions that Axel never truly died, but rather faded into darkness where he would wander until he would find his heart’.- KH wiki. As I’m taking Axel from after his fading, the time he doesn’t spend in dreams will be spent wandering the darkness.
As a whole, Axel is quite agile and a good fighter, definitely more than able to hold his own in a struggle.
(As a side note-- according to KH wiki, “when Axel bids his final farewell to Roxas, it can be seen upon closer inspection that the teardrop at the end of the scene belongs to Axel, which displays his emotional capacities.” I just feel like this is important to note as it’s further evidence of Axel’s capacity to somewhat ‘feel.’ 8D)

Trapped here in this unending expanse of nothing but darkness, Axel had a lot of time to think.
Oddly enough, he’d spent a good portion of it wondering if just maybe the drive behind clinging to his plans in the Organisation with Saix so tightly had morphed, from simple loyalty into another, more selfish reason altogether. The need to have a purpose.
It was easy to lose that drive down here; easy to feel like just lying down and never getting up again. But Axel continuously fought it, forcing himself to find reasons to keep moving. Every step was a possibly redundant one- who knew how many times he’d been in circles? How many times he’d backtracked, or even tripped, gotten up and headed back where he’d come from? It was getting harder and harder to not give up and simply quit this endless search. He almost had, so many times.
But then he’d rally that motivation. Dig out that purpose and take a good, long look at it. Hey, he’d tell himself, maybe I’ll find a way out soon. Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for.
Maybe he’d find a heart.
