Let me start by saying I wasn't really asked for a proper Q&A, but since the awesome Kat asked me for a ~guide, I'm doing this. Besides, making a banner thingie for this post made me feel classy as fuq So let us begin *rolls sleeves up*

is my life saving belt. I literally use it on every icon, on some the opacity is so low that you can't notice, but most times it's totally visible like here
Other textures that I love and tend to overuse
vetica / fuuurs / innocent_lexys / by: ? / rebel
For bigger textures, I go with these ones
mm3butterfly / mm3butterfly / likealight
So basically, if the texture has borders, I'll be all over it. If it's grungy or light blobs, I'll be all over that too.

For the first icon, I used the 2nd 200x200 texture by mm3butterfly I just listed above and this one right here (also by mm3butterfly)

My favourite method for making complex icons is crying. I open photoshop, a blank canvas and a few caps I've selected at random, then cry. Once I've shed my tears, I color the caps and try to blend them and by blending I mean setting to Lighten or Screen. If it works, I cry. If it doesn't work, I cry. Then - and I'm not joking - I go to a random texture folder I have and with closed eyes, pick a couple of textures. Then I play the "How many textures can I slap on and call it a day?" game, which btw is very common for my icon making.
The textures I used on that icon are these two (first one I think is by innocent_lexys and second one is by unknown)
And there is another texture used that I combined with the border one, but I can't find it in the gigantic mess that is my texture folder :| One day. One day I'm going to organize everything, but today is not that day.
