Part Six When the phone rings, Jensen is hesitant to answer. On the last ring before the answering machine picks up, Jensen grabs the phone and clears his throat; he doesn't recognize the voice on the other end of the line.
"You know Jensen, I don't understand what your problem is. My boy Jared is jumping through hoops for you trying to figure things out between you two - if there's anything to figure out - and you keep acting like you're some fifteen year old girl with sand in her vagina. What the fuck."
Jensen's mouth hangs open in surprise. "What? Who is this?"
"It doesn't fucking matter. What matters is that you get over whatever issues you seem to have and figure out if Jared is worth it. And believe me. He's worth it."
It's a few minutes before Jensen realizes that the dial tone is humming dully in his ear. He hangs up dumbfounded and leans heavily against the counter. Jensen does think Jared's worth it. Hell, why else would he be making such a fuss about stupid things like Jared having to help out a friend before meeting him, or taking out a student's mother because he's too much of a nice guy to say no?
He thinks that maybe he's waiting for some grand romantic gesture, which is stupid, because Jensen isn't a girl, and guys don't need those kinds of things.
But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice.
There's a post-it on the calender reminding Jensen of his date with Katie that evening. He wonders if it's too late to cancel. He wonders why he even cares.

Jared is in a funk. He's sullen and mopey and his siblings and his friends don't know what to do with him. He doesn't answer the phone when he calls, he doesn't answer the door when they knock, and on the few times that Mike and Megan broke in after pounding on the door and threatening bodily harm, Jared stares into space and ignores them altogether.
Mike is furious. Megan is worried.
When Mike picks up the phone after finding Jensen's number, Jared just blinks down at Megan's fingers as they slip around his, squeezing. "Come on, Jared. It'll be okay. Just... Please, Jared."
"What did he say?" Megan asks softly once Mike is finished. Mike shrugs his shoulders to indicate nothing and squeezes Jared's shoulder before heading out.
"I'm going to stay with him for a bit." Harley whines from the floor, resting his head on Jared's knee, Jared's hand coming to immediately rest on the top, scratching idly behind his ears.
Megan can feel tears prickling at her eyes. It's like watching Jared after the divorce all over again.

What Jared can't figure out is why he's taking this so hard. He had two dates with Jensen. Two! That isn't enough time for people to get that emotionally invested in each other. But maybe that's just it. Two dates, one successful (if the speed with which they were heading for the bedroom was any indication) maybe was a definite step towards a starting relationship.
Maybe that's how Jensen saw it. Maybe that's why Jensen was so infuriated.
Jared is fucking sick of maybe.

Katie is still just as interesting, funny and witty as she was the first time they sat together at the coffee shop. However, Jensen is feeling bored. Beyond certain topics, Katie is actually quite vapid, superficial. He idly wishes that Jared were here instead, telling an amusing anecdote about the kids in his class, or his dog.
"Jensen?" Katie asks, laughing softly. "Are you still with me?"
Jensen smiles sheepishly. "Sorry."
Katie laughs again and it isn't long until Jensen finds his mind going elsewhere. Wishing that he were with someone else entirely.
By the time they leave the restaurant, it's late. Jensen offers to walk Katie to her car, and she loops her arm around his bicep, leaning in close and giggling against his shoulder. She's a bit too drunk for Jensen to feel comfortable letting her drive herself home, but, well...
As they turn the corner, Jensen bumps into someone coming in the opposite direction and his mouth goes dry as he glances up to apologize and sees Jared staring back at him.
"Jared." He's reminded that Katie is still there, fingers wrapped possessively around his arm and sees a muscle in Jared's jaw twitch.
"Jensen."
It's awkward as hell.
"Uh, well. It was nice seeing you." Jensen steers Katie around the corner and down the block feeling the tickle of Jared's eyes on him the entire way. He deposits Katie at her vehicle, kisses her cheek, and tells her to drive safe before not-quite running back up the street in hopes of catching Jared.

An arm shoots out and wraps around Jensen's arm as he turns the corner, and he lets out a yelp of surprise.
Jared's long fingers loosen and he looks at Jensen with an unreadable expression that leaves Jensen shifting his weight from foot to foot self-consciously.
"What are you doing here?" he asks quietly, eyes trained on the ground.
Jared doesn't answer - at least not right away - eyes still focused on Jensen.
"Jared... talk to me."
Jared's stubborn silence is beginning to grate on Jensen's nerves. He clenches his teeth and glares up at Jared. "Fine. You want to give me the silent treatment, that's just fucking fine. But I don't have to stand here at take it. And I think it's pathetic that you have to get your friends to call me up and give me a verbal dressing down."
That spurs Jared into action and he puts out an arm to stop Jensen's leaving. "I came to see you. Talk to you. But then she was there, and her hand was - " He trails off. "What do mean calling you? I didn't ask anyone to -"
This time Jensen cuts Jared off. "Oh, that's rich. Telling me how fucking childish that I'm being because God Forbid that I be jealous that this really great guy that I met who's funny and smart and handsome happened to take out someone else when I thought that there was really something there."
Jared's eyes flicker over Jensen's face and a small smile quirks the corner of his mouth. "Were you really jealous?" Jared asks quietly.
"You have no idea," Jensen admits.
Jared reaches out and draws Jensen closer, his lips touching Jensen's lightly, barely more than a brush of lips. Jensen's breath catches and he presses forward, sucking Jared's lip between his teeth, hands reaching to slide up along Jared's sides, pressing more firmly together.
Jared moans softly, tilting his head and cupping the back of Jensen's head, tongue licking across Jensen's lips and then dipping into his mouth. Jensen's fingers clench in Jared's shirt, and he revels in the feeling of Jared's mouth against his, the skill with which he kisses, and realizes that if he hadn't been so stupid, he could have been having this a hell of a lot more often.
They stand there on the corner trading heated kisses, Jensen's breath warming Jared's cheek as Jared sucks bites and nips into Jensen's neck. "I think - " Jensen begins before cursing and fisting his hand in Jared's hair. "I think that we should be somewhere a lot more private."
Jared looks up, eyes dark and heated. Slowly he pulls away from Jensen, running a hand down Jensen's shirt to smooth out the wrinkles, make him look more presentable. He links his fingers through Jensen's and tugs him back in the direction of where Katie's car had been parked.
Fortunately, Jared's house isn't very far, and once they're inside, Jared turns off the porch light, locks the door and ushers Jensen upstairs, minimal contact the entire way. Jensen tingles in all the small places that Jared touches him; wrist; hip; neck; back. By the time they reach Jared's bedroom Jensen is hypersensitive, he's sucking in air in an attempt to calm himself down. Jared presses a hand to the small of Jensen's back and he has to bite his lip and clench his hands to stop from just doing it in the hallway.
"C'mon, Jare. C'mon." Jensen pants hoarsely into the hollow of Jared's throat.
Jared doesn't reply and tugs at the hem of his shirt, sliding a warm hand against Jensen's cool, shivering stomach. There's no sound other than the snick of clothes whisking against skin as they tumble into bed, naked.
Then it's skin against hot, sweaty skin, and Jensen knows there's time to explore this later. Slower. But he can't resist trailing fingers down Jared's side, against the ribs he can feel beneath a layer of muscle. "Fuck."
"Hell, I hope so." Jared's smiling softly, and Jensen's breath gets stuck inside his chest.
He's sprawled on Jared's chest and Jensen can smell a slight hint of sweat beneath his cologne. "Lube?" Then rolls over to paw through the drawer.
It's damp and slow and sweet as Jared arches up into Jensen, broad hands roaming everywhere. Jared has huge hands, they're calloused in all the right places, and Jensen's achingly hard. He presses in slowly and freezes at the sound Jared makes. It's wanting.
Jared makes a soft noise and grips at Jensen's hips. "Please."
Then his hips snap forward, and Jensen thrusts in hard and Jared keens when he hits that fucking spot. Jared reaches for his cock, desperate to relieve himself, but Jensen's got his wrists pinned to his side before he can manage more than a jerk.
A few more thrusts and they're both close to the edge and Jensen stiffens and shudders, his thrusts turning ragged and hard.
"Jared."
Jensen reaches between their bodies and grasps at Jared's cock. It only takes one tug before Jared's comes and he's biting down on Jensen's shoulder to keep from screaming too loud.
When he's coherent again, Jensen pulls out slowly. Jared's still floating somewhere in the post-coital glow and doesn't protest when he comes back with a damp cloth.
They're tucked together beneath the blankets when Jared turns to look at Jensen.
"Um."
Jensen smiles, the edges of his lips quirking upwards. "Yeah."

Three months later...
"Come to work with me?" Jared asks. "The kids want to start on a new book and I thought it'd be a good idea to read yours."
Jensen's smile is caught on his face. "You sure? I- I mean this is sort of last minute. Don't you need to go through the principal and other... bureaucratic crap?"
Jared shrugs. "Got it cleared already." And bursts out into a big grin when he sees Jensen's gobsmacked expression. "Don't look so surprised, man. I know how easy you are."
He dodges a swipe at his head and backs away laughing at Jensen's disgruntled expression.

Jensen waves awkwardly at the children sitting on the floor. He has their rapt attention and no idea what to do with it.
"So. Uh, hi. I'm here to read you my book. Alligator Chomp."
"I love that book!" cries an adorable little girl with pigtails. She bounces where she's sitting cross-legged on the floor. "Are you going to do the voices? Mommy always does voices." She puts emphasis on mommy and Jensen has to stomp down on the urge to sigh in exasperation.

"Are you sure you're a children's author?" Jared's grinning at him with a mischievous glint in his eye.
"What? 'Course I am. How else do you think I kept those little things' attention?"
"You were awkward, dude. Do you even like children?" Jared says.
"Um. Well, you see." He pauses and tries to think of an excuse.
"Bull. C'mon, let's get out of here. Coffee or something."
End.
