DIE VISTA DIE

Ack. I've been ridiculously struggling with the new laptop/Vista. Internet on this stupid thing is SO slow, I haven't even bothered to try youtube. I've been trying to DL Windows Live Messenger so I don't feel so cut off. It's not working. So I go to the download page, hit Download, thing pops up (only giving me the option to Save File or Cancel, ( Read more... )

::blink:: what's telling you file sharing is on?

While I'm connected to the internet, when I go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center, under Sharing and Discover > File Sharing, it says ON. And tells me to use my firewall program to change the setting. But.. I'm using the free Norton that came with it, atm, and there's no option to turn it off.

It's probably referring to the Windows firewall...?
but when I look at mine, if I click the drop arrow next to it, it gives me the option to turn file sharing off. Are you not getting that???

Nope. I'm not given the option. It tells me to go to my firewall program. Will look into Windows Firewall and see where that's at.

All in all, Vista's not too bad, after those hiccups.

Have you tried temporarily diabling Norton and then disabling file sharing?

(Also, I don't know why your internet is really, really slow. I wish I did. But possibly I can upload the extensions ou want and then you can install them (same with Live Messenger)? Though that doesn't get around slow internet.)

\o\ A restart let me install Live Messenger! I've asked around, I thin kit's the uni's internet today that's being stupidly slow.

Norton is.. *throws hands up* I have no idea how to deal with it, since I normally use McAfee. Will try that the moment Thunderbird's synced up!

It'd be really awesome if it would be possible for you could snag the XPI file for Delicious! It's a Right click and Save Link As on the "Accept & Install" button. Thank you so much!

Wahee! (For the install, not the internet being stupidly slow. Obviously.)

Norton is infuriating, and also, useless. (Anti-virus software that can't remove trojans? Oh yeah, I want that in my life.)

A download link (to sendspace, because the file is small).

Also, as a warning, Vista will be incomprehensible and useless for ages until you get used to it. (Okay, I was sort of in love with it from day one, but that's because my computer wasn't working at all with XP. Also, though I've only had Vista for two years vs four in XP, I've had far fewer problems in Vista (and the problems I've had with Vista are minor (generally appearance issues which were easily fixed vs having to install an entirely new OS)).

Um. Yes. I'm probably one of the few people on the planet who actually defends Vista, but only when I'm on a good streak with it. Right now, there is a good streak (bad streaks are really issues with Dell, who make craptastic power cords).

I have to agree, I like Vista much better than XP. It's a lot better at containing errors so a browser crash will only crash the browser and not the whole thing, for example. It's never bluescreened on me.
