This is a pattern I've been familiar with since I was a small kid. The message was repeatedly dunned into me that only Speshul people could hear and speak to spirits, ergo if stupid unSpeshul me tried to do it I would either end up imagining things or talking to something Eeeeevil that would fuck me and my family up. Not sure why grown adults would feel threatened by a six-year-old, or offer spiritual abuse rather than guidance, but there you go.

*winces* What a horrible thing to say to a young person. Well, to anyone, but especially to a young person in your care. I'm glad there was a supportive adult around to counteract some of the damage.
