Here we go again for today. Slowly, slowly, I shall ween you into some of the wackiness and interesting things people do to themselves. I've been all nice-like, and started yesterday with a variant on Piercing. that was more on the skin than in it. Today, we go even deeper down.
Implantation: More than just a freak show.
Hum. dermal Implantation. Definatly not of the faint of heart, but not a slashfest either, though some may look worrying with all the blood, thats only because it's a small, deep cut, rather than a long shallow one, though some forms of Implantation are just just under the skin.
The forms vary vastly in their shape and function, from Silicon shapes, studs, to magnets and microchips, some appear the work of madness, others, of Genius, or perhaps simply Mad Science. Believe it or not guys, those silicone deathtrap procedures women seem to love dropping into their breasts are actually categorized as Implantation!
..Didn't think of that, did you? :)
Jeweleye- Extra-ocular implantation: Risk Outweighs the Benefit?
Jeweleye is an exclusive modification currently (when i looked it up) available only in the Netherlands. Consisting of implanting small slivers of shaped platinum between the mucosa of the eye and the eyeball itself. Obvious extreme risk is Infection leading to loss of the eye, or Blindness. Can't say it's worth it, in my opinion. Take a look for yourself. (finished look. no sharp knives or blood)
http://www.technovelgy.com/graphics/content/eye-jewelry-3.jpg One the other end of the Ooh-EEk scale, we have Magnet Implantation, which i personally find very fascinating.
It's basic concept is, to quote Steve Haworth (who experienced the procedure personally for six months under the fingertips) "that if you implant small magnets under the skin, they will move in response to an electromagnetic field and transfer this as sensation to the surrounding nerves. This in effect allows one to extend “vision” (or touch) into the electromagnetic spectrum." He continues to speak about the procedure, and how he could feel electrical fields of machines and such afterwards, almost like a superhero power! The second link below is the article on the procedure, but has some blood-inclusive surgical photos, so be warned. As the implant is below the skin, there's not many pictures i could put in to show you, save this: Yes, the magnet under his skin is doing that..

http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20060115.html Sub-dermal implantation with magnets and other such stuff has amazing potential for more that just self-expression, however. I've read bits and pieces about Security and Identity implants being done overseas, and the possibility of even Contraceptive implants becoming available.. the next step up from the IUD, but also possibly available for men? We can only wait and see.
Transdermal implants are kind of icky in my mind. some can allow you to get that "hell-raiser" effect, by implanting metal studs or spikes under shallow skin ridges, like the scalp, but silicone shapes are also used subdermally (completely under the flesh) and Transdermally (protruding from the flesh). I've found very few i actually find appealing, so yeah. these links may ick a few people out. First one is probably the best. He has metallic transdermal "horns", and silicon sub-dermal eye ridges, and looks very Devilish, in a sophisticated way.

http://modblog.bmezine.com/wp-content/uploads/200702151006-pix1.jpg Microdermals, a smaller, more discreet Transdermal stud. I think they enhance the look this guy is going for very nicely.

http://modblog.bmezine.com/wp-content/uploads/200609251938-pix1.jpg I also stand corrected, as the links to the Glasses posted yesterday are apparently a transdermal stud implantation to the nose, rather than a Surface piercing, as first thought. They still look cool though. Here's the link again. :)

Summary:
Implantation= Variable in function, risk and Aesthetic.
Would I do it?: Once they perfect Magnet implantation cover-coating, I'd be willing to give it a go. The others?
.. Not so keen. ^-^;;
Infection Risk Factor?: Med,-High depending on the type and size of implant, but I'd only really put Jeweleye in the "high" category, just because the eye is so delicate and precious.
