Speaking of the bright child, she'd probably be sticking close by Martel as well - if she hadn't already been commandeered by Dieter Stragen and his polaroid camera. (Martel has always correctly assumed he hoarded the film, but Stragen prefers to encourage the belief that he had some kind of secret supplier.)
"I want to investigate the library," he says, tugging on Candice's waist. "Come with me."

"All right, all right, the most important things first--" She smiles at their company, and allows herself to be led off to the library.
"We'll be back soon."

"Must you, with that camera?" Martel adds, hand in the small of Candice's back.
"Your mama appreciates it," Stragen tells him, archly, and Martel snorts as they withdraw, letting the door swing shut behind him.
"This way, I think."

She admires their location as they walk, tucked against Martel's side comfortably.
"God, it's so pretty here- I don't think I've ever seen anything like it, definitely not in person."
