Candice has, over two months in, mostly settled into the life of raising two infants and one seven-year-old, but she's still pretty glad when Inga is down for a nap and Magda and Damita are, while not quite asleep, settled on their blankets quietly and safely. Adjusting to the addition of infant twins and a wife who can rationally expect him to enter discussion and account for her in his decision-making has been one thing. Adjusting to Italy has been another. Adjusting to all of the little things that came part and parcel with disability has been...harder to swallow. He hasn't had a driver since he was sixteen years old, for fuck's sake, and here he is: sitting in the back of the car, contemplating the reduction of his pain medication and his most recent doctor's assurances that he has fully regained the use of his eye and what he needs to focus on is learning to allow for the lack of the other.

He misses depth perception, but he's not going to look a gifthorse in the mouth. (Much.) What he hadn't done was tell Candice exactly where he was going or why, just like he hasn't talked to her about his eyesight or injuries in a while (besides the occasional argument about medication and doctor's advice about alcohol intake ( ... )

She glances up when she senses company.

"Oh, you're back. Where'd you go, anyway?" Her smile is slight, and considering she doesn't know that he can see her facial expressions, it says something that she's always so expressive around him anyway - but he knows by now she's earnest to a fault.

"Doctor," he says, briefly, letting the door fall neatly shut behind him when he enters the room properly to sit on the floor by the twins. (He can if he likes.) "And I dropped something in the post for Dieter while I was out."

"Dieter loves presents. What did the doctor have to say?" She abandons her seat to go sit next to him and the twins, tucking her skirt around herself as she settles.
