Day 03 - This took some consideration since while I will be the first to admit that I am a huge Square-Enix fan and they probably own my soul or something, I do have love for other game series. The Tales of series is a big one, and it's one that doesn't get a ton of attention in the US going by sales alone. (Granted, Namco could do with marketing better.)
However, in the end I decided to pick the Shadow Hearts series for this. While it's not totally obscure or anything like that, the fact still remains that I don't know a whole lot of people who have played it. (I've actually not played the third game, but I heard it was bad and... it doesn't have Yuri in it.)
Anyway, it's a J-RPG series with an interesting battle system that's based on timing, but it also has fun, quirky characters, a love story that's there but not shoved in your face the way a lot of other games do, and an interesting setting. It takes place on Earth in the early 1900's, which is something that most RPGs don't do. Not that I have anything against fictional worlds by any means, but Shadow Hearts does something interesting and different. However, even with the real world setting, it's still got a lot of occult stuff and all sorts of monsters, so you could say it's an alternate version of Earth. They do put some historical events in there, though -- rough versions of them, at least. (Princess Anastasia is a party member.)
Bottom line, it's a lot of fun, it doesn't always take itself 100% seriously, the main protagonist isn't exactly your normal hero type, and one of the characters in the second game is a gay wrestler. What more could you ask for?
