Oh I actually love LOTR!
I figured to a mind that can't stop it would help distract from the immediate and let them sleep! I think I'll have to explain in another snippet.
The Hobbit is very different than LOTR though! You should give it a chance! ;) I mean when you don't need to sleep! :P

You know I actually love LOTR! My thinking is that Sherlock doesn't indulge in fantasy because it isn't relevant. So for someone who can't stop there mind from going over relevant things maybe something that doesn't reflect on their immediate life would distract them. I should have been clearer about this!
I'll write a sequel! Because the Mycroft in my head has a secret passion for sci-fi/Fantasy books!
