It’s different from any story Dan’s ever written.
Boy meets boy and they fall in something more than love. There’s no metaphor for that.

It starts with something from a romantic comedy:
Stay away from my sister.
She asked for it.
A punch.
The unconventional beginning has always been a common trope.

Dan writes:
Damien Hoover was a good smart funny normal boy who lived in a bad scary uptight too-bright world.
Dan writes:
Charlie Trout was a horrible spoiled duplicitous rich boy who lived in a ugly dirty revolting world of his own.

So then Vanessa asks (red pen poised above pristine paper): What makes Charlie Trout special?

Insert:
A night of debauchery and you think you know all about my world, huh?
Chuck holds up two pills; a blue pill and a red pill, but then goes off book. He doesn’t say: choose. He doesn’t warn: if you take this, you will never be the same. Instead he orders: now.
A salute in reply: yes sir, no sir, right away sir.
(It’s all for his art; honest.)
Dan jumps down the rabbit hole; he’ll see where it goes.

Dan writes:
Whores and hookers twirl around them, but Damien’s eyes are always on Charlie Trout.

Scene three, part two:
Setting: In a jail-Chuck Bass interjects: like a gang-banger movie!-cell.
Charlie Trout cries for his mother. Nobody loves him.
Damien Hoover opens the Pandora’s Box and its Dan who has to pay.
Nobody loves him.
Dan heaves a weary sigh, says reluctantly: I do.

A blow out. You betrayed me flashes in Charlie’s eyes.
Dan’s more distraught then he’s allowed.

A joint is shared.
Dan’s fingers fumble and overlap Chuck’s as he reaches for the cigarette. (Chuck is warm.)
Consider this your education, Humphrey.
Inhale.
Yes, Obi-Wan.
Exhale.
This doesn't mean I forgive you.
Inhale.
We're just bored, is all.
Exhale.
The lines between Chuck Bass and Charlie Trout blur.

They get stuck in an elevator.
He watches the numbers ascend as they slowly creep upwards; one, two, three.
Chuck’s hand brushes against the back of his.
Dan freezes.
Four, five, six. They touch. Seven, eight, nine.
The elevator door opens.

Damien Hoover kisses Charlie Trout. Chuck Bass laughs.

So then Vanessa gushes (red pen lying beside pristine paper): Knew it.

Dan writes:
Damien Hoover was a naïve inexperienced unsure confused boy who lived loved in a bad scary uptight world he thought he knew.
Dan writes:
Charlie Trout was a wounded hurt amazing unique boy who lived loved in a sad dirty unhappy world he made out of necessity.
Dan writes:
They don’t live happily ever after. Maybe.

It’s different from every story Dan’s ever written. (It’s better.)
Boy meets boy and they fall in something more than love. There’s no metaphor for that.
