{Twenty-eight (56)} &diams I know the pieces fit / 'Cause I watched them fall away

This is becoming intolerable. I do not require padding to leave my house; nor do I require warnings for sharp objects, food, or beverages. If I am expected to put up with this for the remainder of this week, I may very well scream.

And to whomever is scribbling 'EXTERMINATE' everywhere, I would greatly appreciate it if you stopped. Immediately.

Splendid!

[While he knew that the main purpose of Fred's visit was more on teh dangerous side, Gai was rather excited for her arrival. He got to start introducing Spring around again. Rather impatiently he awaited her arrival.]

[Fred didn't bat an eye when Gai switched the 'quest for a toaster' to her needing one rather than him. That made sense; otherwise, Spring might grow suspicious, as Gai's toaster was no doubt working perfectly. He had only just gotten a new one recently, after all.

She waved at the boy as she walked back to the door.] Of course. I am certain I will be able to eat here soon, and perhaps we can talk more then.

[She glanced at Gai as she passed him, waiting to talk more freely until they were out of earshot of the boy.]

Thank you, Spring. And do not worry, she will visit again! [Or they would visit her. Either way, he would make sure their whole group kept getting together. It was too easy to get out of touch, especially with all of the strangeness of late. Gai would do what he could to help.

He headed out the door after Fred.] We are headed to the big park. There will be a bit of a surprise after we get there, but I ask you to trust me. I think if you take a moment and think about it, you will know where the unpredictable thing will come up.

[It wasn't long before they were at the elevator and he was pushing the button for it to come.] As long as the elevator cooperates. Sometimes I wonder if there is any way to predict beforehand when it will behave and when it will not.

I trust you. [Fred nodded seriously. She remembered what Gai had told her the last time they spoke of this, and yes, she had a fair idea of when he would choose to do it. He might do it abruptly, without warning; she decided to take his words as the only warning he might give her.]

Yes... it would be much better if we had some way to do that, but the Tree much prefers to be unpredictable. [She still remembered when Rogue had tried setting up that early warning system for the Wilderness, and the thing had grown truly unpredictable immediately. There had to be a correlation between those things.]

Then we should speak very little on the way, I am sorry. [The less they said while making their way to the Library the better. They didn't need to incur more risk. The elevator safely deposited them at Access Point and Gai nodded in the direction of the Park, leading.] All the same, it is a nice day out, a good day to be with friends!

[He smiled as he kept walking, heading for the very edge of the island. Gai stopped and held out his hand for Fred's.] Now.

I understand. [Honestly, if this hadn't been such a dangerous undertaking, she would have enjoyed herself. This was a good day for a walk with a friend, even if they didn't speak.

She put her hand in his without hesitation, mentally preparing herself for what was about to happen.] Alright.

[Gai nodded and gave her hand a quick squeeze before stepping forward and off the island, leading her along. He'd gotten very good at aiming for what he couldn't see, and only had to correct his angle slightly with a foot push as they started down.]

Be ready to land! [It had to be shouted, the wind rushing past made too much noise for him to be quiet.] Roll with it, distributing your momentum!

[The ground rushed up at them, now visible as they got close, and Gai relaxed, ready to hit.]

[Fred stepped over the edge with him, trusting him to make sure they were falling in the right direction. It helped that she knew there was no way they could be killed by simply falling, but she had never tried doing this herself. There were too many ways it could go wrong... you could be stuck and starve to death, miscalculate and become impaled by a treebranch or possibly break your neck in landing...

She thrust the alarming thoughts from her head, as best she could, and concentrated on his words. She had been training with him long enough that she should be able to do that with little difficulty...

As the ground rushed toward them, she gulped air and forced herself to relax as best she could. Hitting the ground tense would only make things more difficult to coordinate.]

Breathe. [They land, and Gai lets the impact spread through his body instead of having it hit one place. Getting up, he glanced over at Fred to shee how she'd done.] Are you all right? It is not too far of a drop but it can be disconcerting. This is still not entirely safe, but I think it is more safe than the Park.

[He nodded to the building up ahead.] I will have to hold your hand to get you inside, and then that is done. Once you have been shown it by someone who can get in, you can return on your own.

[The moment of impact came before she had time to obey his command. Luckily she could leave breathing to be regulated by her body; it was one less thing that she had to worry about. She rolled with the impact, not too badly. Sitting up, she took quick stock of herself, decided there were no broken bones or abrasions (though from the way her upper arm was throbbing, she would have a nasty bruise there tomorrow), and stood, a touch carefully.] I am fine, though I think I may have thumped against a rock carelessly when I landed. Nothing that will hamper my abilities.

Very well. [She held out her hand to him again, and smiled.] I shall have to be more careful with my landing, the next time.

We can see to that as soon as we are back, if you are sure it will not be a problem. [He would work on rolling with her, dispersing momentum, next lesson, Gai decided. It wasn't like anyone came here all that often, but it was important to be able to land safely.] Otherwise I have a first aid kit on me at all times. [Gai gestured at the small pack he had strapped to his shin. Sure, it had knives in it, but it also had things that would help too.]

[But if she was fine... Gai took her hand again and lead her into the darkened building.] I know that it looks like it is going to collapse at any time, but I think that is just appearance. [The vines covering the crumbling building made the dim light inside rather greenish, and when they stepped in Fred would be able to see nearly endless rows of journals.]

This is the library. [His voice was a bit hushed.] Taking a journal out of here is very dangerous and not worth the risk. Showing someone this is also risky for them and you. It is undoubtedly watched because otherwise it would not ( ... )

[She flexed her arm, grimacing a little at the pain.] It will be fine. [There was little enough he could do for a bruise, anyway.

She allowed herself to be led by Gai; he knew this place, and where to go, far better than she.

When they stepped into the building itself, Fred's eyes went wide.] ...there are so many. [Her tone was just as quiet as his had been. This was more like a cemetery than a library... every single book here had once belonged to someone who had died or disappeared.

She reached out to select one at random--it was one close to the door. She turned it over, and saw that it had the name 'Birch' scrawled across it.

Fred looked back up at Gai.]

I will be careful not to visit too often, then. I assume this is how you know when people have vanished? Rather than just being taken by the lift, or lost in the Wilderness?

If you are sure. [She was an adult; she could determine if she was too injured or fine. Gai wouldn't push her on that.

Gai released her hand once they were inside and he watched her go to the shelves, nodding at the question.]

Exactly. Their journals show up here and there is no question. It is also how I was more able to bear when Bell or others I care about are taken by the elevator. I can know that they are not gone. It means a great deal.

But it is also hard saying when people are gone. I try to treat it as one of the things of the Sphere and people get upset or act like I am lying, and so I try to treat it like it is more serious and people do not like that either. I... I do not like when it is my turn.

I can see how that would be quite a relief, yes.

[The words were said half-distractedly, as she ran her fingers over the spines of more books.

She glanced at him, wincing a little in sympathy. She had seen the reactions some people had... rarely were people happy to receive that sort of news, but only new people (or children, she supposed) really thought that the announcement was a lie. Most knew there were ways to find out such things, and, well... it seemed that she knew how to find out now, too.]

Perhaps I can do it next time. Or at some point, anyway; there must be more than one person who can reach this, I am certain I have seen other people than you announcing disappearances... that doctor, Simon. And others, though I cannot recall who just now.

It is the best way to make sure that someone is not dead when they are missing. Or the second best. It is easiest if they write something when being taken bythe elevator. But the Library can be a sort of a comfort.

[A very bleak comfort, here surrounded by the ghosts of Edensphere past. But it was better to know than to wonder, of that Gai was sure.

Gai offered her a half-smile.]

There is a rotation. Though we do not speak of the names, not here. I do not believe here is very safe. But if you are sure you are all right with the burden, your name can be added to it. I... It is not pleasant, and I would not blame you if you do not want to really do it.

[Bleak comfort indeed.] Better than nothing, I imagine.

[She turned away from the shelves, smiling at him, faintly, in return.] I would like that, yes. [She might not know everyone, but if she could help her friend...

She wanted to do that much, at least.] And I shall be most careful.
