Stream Video to TVs

I currently have Blockbuster Online as my rental service. My parents just switched because of Blockbuster being stupid. I've never had any problem with them, but I'm thinking that there are better options out there than what I currently have ( Read more... )

talk about timing- we just (as in tonight) signed up for netflix as my laptop has an hdmi port. the movie came through pretty well- slight choppiness, although not sure if that's our older tv or the laptop :) but w00t for movies streaming on the nice big screen! must fix the laptop going to sleep every so often mind you.... ;) for the technical how-he-made-it-go ping callmetc, i averted my eyes lest i get too geeky for art school *grin*

I adore Netflix. Easy to use, and the one time I've had a problem it was immediately fixed. I had queued Season 4 of Lost, and was sent the last 3 discs, instead of the first 3. I ended up getting to keep those, and got the first 3, in addition, for as long as it takes me to watch them, at no extra charge. No hassle, no complaint. I've called Customer service twice now, the other was to ask about moving, and both times, I got a human in less than a minute, and both were awesome.

Edited to add: I've been a member for about 7 months now, and I've yet to have a problem with any disc I've rented, they've all been almost as good as new, no scratches, no skips.

i was a netflix member for about 6 or 7 years, wow, that's a long time. I've always loved their service and have always been impressed with it. My only complaint about their online streaming is it doesn't work with macs and so I never used it since the PC is upstairs.

I just dropped it because of budget reasons and after that many years, I really have seen almost all the movies I wanted to see. Now, we're just using the library for movies. :) If I was cutting budget items, I'd totally keep it and have always highly recommended it. Also, in the many years I've had it and through many addresses, I had movies that got lost in the mail (one instance I think housemates stole them, actually) and never had an issue with reporting lost movies. Also, in all that time, I probably had only 4 maybe 5 dvds that were damaged/unplayable... wish my luck with library movies was anywhere near as good.

I have it a few months, getting it 3 at a time and love it. Do not watch on computer. Love, Aunt R

I've had the Roku Netflix Box since it was first released. I got a Netflix account because of it.

It works great. I have mine hard wired to my router, but WIFI works just fine as well (802.11g is got more bandwidth then my cable modem). Keep in mind that the selection is only a percentage of the full Netflix library, but they do have a fantastic selection of TV shows and they have an agreement with STARS now, so you'll get a rotation of whatever they are playing that month.

They have many HBO and Showtime shows available too (Weeds, Dead Like Me, Dexter). Some of them are just the first season.

If you're not aware, you can't search using the Roku box, you have to add items to your Watch It Now que using a computer and then they become available from the box. Not a bid deal, but it's something to know.

I am aware of most of that from reading, but its always good to hear when they're lying or not. :) Watching Weeds is definitely a big selling point for me. ;)

I'd be using the wireless. Do you have experience with the wireless, or proxy experience, or do you just know that it connects? :)

The first firmware version had some WIFI issues. Mostly it would just drop off and not reliably reconnect.

When connected, the video was just as good as when wired. They have updated the firmware since then the fix the issue, but since my tv backs up to the closet with the router I had already plugged it in.

You'll be able to test the quality via your laptop on wifi. If it works fine that way, you'll get the same quality on the Roku.
