[Now that the storm has passed and the dust has settled and the air outside is safe to breathe, Mads has decided to venture out into the Keep. He normally does so when activity is at a minimum and his chance of being discovered were slim. Honestly, he had no desire to converse with the people Lord Deior had so generously...saved ( Read more... )

[Bryn is already in the chapel. It's one of the places she likes to go every so often on quiet days. It isn't that Bryn's a religious sort, because she's not, but there's a small part of her that feels it's the place to go when she thinks of home.

She sits inside and thinks about her life back home. She thinks about the mother and father who really, were more mother and father in name than action. She thinks about Gunn, the only family she ever really had, and his current, apparent lack of existence.

It's where she lingers on all the things she can't change.]

[When Mads realizes the chapel is already occupied, he frowns and turns to go. But then he realizes just who it is. That girl from the punishment a few weeks ago.

She's tolerable at least.

He'll just sit somewhere else. But certainly not out of sight of her.]

[Bryn doesn't hear anyone come in, and undisturbed, her thoughts continue to wander. She idly wonders whether she really would have kept on her parents' track as she grew older. If she would have gone to school and let them arrange a marriage to someone who would have kept her life in line the way they did. She wonders if she would have stood idly by as they molded Gunn to their image of perfection.

She wonders how it all would have turned out if she hadn't turned into a cougar and discovered she was a shapeshifter. If she hadn't had to go on the run. If she hadn't had to hide it for the last three years...]

[Bryn's thoughts are picked up on easily enough. And most were dismissed as uninteresting. Her home life was hardly anything he could care about it. Still, he'll continue to listen, just to see if she does think of something he can care about.

And suddenly there it is. She's a shapeshifter. For a moment, his brow drops and he looks furious.

Then his expression is almost pleased. Genuinely pleased. If he could not have Anna, Bryn would make a nice substitute. He gets up and approaches her carefully, so as not to startle her.]

Bonjour, ah, Bryn was it?

[Bryn is pulled out of her thoughts by that friendly greeting, and she looks up to see Mads standing near her. She hazards a hesitant smile and nods.]

Yes, that's me. And you're Mads, yes?

[He smiles. It's sort of chilling.]

I am, yes. May I join you? Or are you expecting company?

[She should have taken that smile as a warning. She'd seen her father give smiles like that to other people. But Bryn's too trusting so she shakes her head.]

No, I'm not expecting anyone. Please join me if you like.

[It's just as well. Mads doesn't have it in him to 'play nice' for long. He sits, leaving a considerable and polite amount of space between them.]

Do you frequent this place often?

[He knows the answer to that, in fact, he probably knows the answer to most of the questions he plans to ask. But making friendly conversation at first will make it easier when he starts getting really nosy.]

Mm, not so often but when I'm looking for a quiet place it's somewhere I come from time to time.

[She gives a small shrug.]

It's not often frequented, I think. And you?

I do not.

[He doesn't get out much.]

But it is an interesting place, yes? There is nothing like this where I am from.

There are lots of these where I'm from...

[She trails off, then shrugs.]

They don't have chapels in New America then? No religious structures?

Ah, there are chapels. They are not this elaborate. The people, they do not see a reason to attend when we have been forgotten, yes?

What do you mean that you've been forgotten?

We cannot live on the surface so we must live below ground. It is very hot. A lot of people feel we have been forgotten by God. So they do not go to the chapels.

That's a shame. I'm not really spiritual but...that sort of feeling is not easy to live with.

[For some. Mads lives with it just fine.]

It is life, non?
