First off, Merry belated Christmas to all! I’m going to try to do a quick recap of the week. Still behind cuts because it was a long and exciting week.
The kids were staying with my parents overnight since our sitter had a appointment the next day. As we are starting out of the house I get a call from my Mom saying that her and Dad were in a bad wreck and the car was totaled. It’s over an hour drive to get to the hospital, so we headed off. They had not cleared the scene of the wreck yet when we came through and I saw how bad it was. There were skid marks and gravel all over the road where a car had went up an embankment and glass all over the road form one side to the other.
At the hospital we had just followed the squad in. Turns out my parents had to be cut from the car. The trooper the covered the accident came out to talk to me and told me that it was a drunk driver w/no insurance. Great Trooper said that in his 14 years of working accident scenes this was the worst one he had been to where someone didn’t get killed.
So what happened?
Mom and Dad were going down the highway in the left lane in their Taurus when the drunk, driving a ’86 S10, ran a stop sign going ‘about’ 40. Dad saw him coming and tried swirving over to the berm to avoid him but still got hit. It took the entire driver’s side out of the car and sent them into a spin where they ended up on the hill. The truck stopped dead in the road when it hit the car and a F350 hit him again in the rear. For some reason the drunk’s girlfriend was at the hospital, even though the lifeflighted him, and was saying that he told her that if she didn’t get in the truck with him he was “going to go kill himself or someone else.”
Nice huh? I almost lost my parents and my kids almost lost their grandparents because he was an idiot. Oh! And to top it all off, according to a relative of his he got out of the hospital and is free. The guy had 2 outstanding warrants before this! Why is he on the street?!
Both my parents are extremely sore and banged up. Dad has glass in his head and he re-injured his bad knee.
So I have to find another sitter for my kids. Mike’s cousin stepped up for me. BIG THANKS!
Office party! I got stuffed and found out that my boss and co-workers really rock. Well, I knew that but it was just reaffirmed!
About 1:00 it starts raining and then, as the afternoon goes on, freezing on the cars. My boss decided that since I live the farthest away should go home early. So, I ended up leaving at 4:00.
Mike woke me up at 5:00 am to tell me that it was still raining and was 38 deg. Outside, so I could drive to work with no problems. Well, it was like a scene out of The Day After Tomorrow when I woke up because at 7:30 the road was nothing but a sheet of ice and the thermometer said 18. So, I did what any smart person would do, I decided to head to work! (Ok, honestly the roads didn’t look THAT bad!) I ended up driving about 15 mph and got to the sitter’s house. I got about a mile down the road and hit a tree. Yes, my @%#@@ antilock brakes worked and I slid into the end of a frozen tree. I broke a few of the branch tips off with my car…..ok a lot of branch tips off. Hey, I didn’t hurt my car! About 500 ft. after that was a big downed tree. I turned around in a drive way and called in to work. And if you’ve heard about the big storm that knocked out power in OH……. J
That night we drove down to Mom & Dad’s do I could fix Christmas dinner for the family. Once you went east to the next county it was clear and smooth driving.
First thing my brother called and told us that they couldn’t come down. They both work for a tree company and they were called out on storm service. So we all went into town to Walmart so I could print off some pictures of the car from Dad’s digital camera. We ended up having dinner at Long John Silvers because at that point no one wanted to cook a big meal just for the few of us that were there. At dinner Mom and I got to discussing Santa pictures and she realized that she hadn’t gotten one of the kids this year, so off to the mall we went. Dawndra didn’t want to get on Santa’s lap because she was too old! Mom convinced her to get a picture taken. Kennedy OTOH was excited to see Santa and wanted to wear the pirate earrings he got from Long John’s in the picture. Mom surprise dme and got me the Garnet and opal ring I had been wanting. Instead of a mother’s ring I wanted a ring that had the kids’ and my birthstones in it. I have to get it sized since it is an antique ring and is a bit small.
So, we ended up having a good day and getting home way later than what we wanted since Christmas at my FILs was cancelled because of the weather and no electric at his GFs house. (Where we usually have Christmas.) This year was going to be a grab and go when the weather got better.
Christmas Day. Opened presents in the morning. I’m still wondering what in the world made me think a stereo was a good present for Dawndra. Or that Santa should bring Kennedy a Spiderman web blaster. But Santa Daddy did get me a new diamond ring.
FIL called to say that they were going to have Christmas at his house instead. He had finally been able to get to Rayna’s and got her back to his house. So after we opened presents at home we loaded up and went to his house.
Have you ever seen a single blade of grass frozen in place in a pencil-sized encasement of ice? I have now. And it sounds like you are walking on broken glass trying to walk across the yard! We had to yell at Kennedy not to run or he could put his eye out on the grass! Oh, I have pictures to download!
Christmas dinner was eggs and ham and we opened presents. Honestly, it was one of the more fun Christmases I have had in a long time.
Then it was off to MIL’s who had snow on top of her ice. All of us got spoiled again.
Dad called and said that the boys got today off and it would be the only day they would get off in 2 week, so we were doing Christmas. Well, it was typical. They got there an hour late because they stopped and ate! Mom worked all morning to get dinner ready and they ate! Well, they ate again too because they felt bad. Michael and Tonda were fighting and I am afraid that they are ready to split and I sure hope not. Right now it is tough with living with her mom, the new baby, and all the hours he is putting in. I know they are not talking well now either. Mom tried to have a talk with him and Mikey talked to him a little, but he kept changing the subject and tuning us out, so I know he doesn’t want to hear it and isn’t listening a bit. By the end of the night though he was acting a little better, so maybe some of it sank in. Maybe.
Other than that I got to get some quality loving time in with my niece Kamerin and my nephew Michael III (little Mikey). Mike held both kids and actually was having fun being an uncle. Kennedy had so much fun playing with Kamerin. Uncle Michael got him a little Spiderman ball pit to play in so he let Kamerin come in and play with him and he was so cute!
Roads are clear and I am busy with claims. It’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but I think a lot of people probably called the 800# over the weekend. Instead of adjusters it is sending the claims to an “Ohio overflow bucket” whatever that is.
Ok, Mike is home with the kids this week and I have asked them to clean their rooms. We’ll see….. I have a feeling that I will be doing it when I am off Friday because the house will be an even bigger wreck. Tonight I have to go home a write out bills. YUCK!
