Supernatural: Season Gr8 (through 8x23)

May 16, 2013 21:37

'tis what the kids on tumblr have been calling it all season. I originally posted this on tumblr but figured I'd post it here, too. I've actually been pretty involved in SPN fandom on tumblr for the past few months. It's a way different format than LJ & I still feel iffy about parts of it, but there's so much good meta out there.

spoilers through 8x23; I'm combining two different review-ish bits I wrote on tumblr )

Mostly, my interest for S9 will be all the Sam/Dean/Castiel triangle stuff. I mean: Sam and Dean will always choose each other but Castiel is coming around to realizing that prioritizing Dean-and not just loving Dean but doing things that show how much he loves Dean-is good for him and it’ll be interesting to see how much more of that he’ll learn now that he’s human.

As for racism: I dunno. The way Kevin’s mother might or might not have been killed off screen and Castiel’s strong-arming Kevin to translate the angel tablet seem to me a part of a larger pattern in U.S. media of diminishing importance and agency from asian characters. Though, I do like that Kevin was rushing out of the bunker until all the lights blew up. If the next season doesn’t deal with Kevin’s mother or his own personal goals, then I’m gonna spork the show for racism. Though, to be honest, I have a feeling the show’s racism will improve before the sexism. :-/

Yeah, there's a lot of potentially interesting stuff in the interactions between the three of them. I'm planning on re-watching "Bitten" & "Freaks & Geeks" because those kinda sum up the two ways that kind of situation can go & I'm going to try to write a meta. We'll see if that happens.

Cas is going to be in such a bad headspace at the start of next season. Even more guilt but now without the ability to actually fix any of what he broke. I'm looking forward to the continuation of that. And crossing my fingers.

You know? I really feel like Sam is okay with Krissy and Charlie because they do get Dean’s attention but they don’t command it the way Benny and Castiel do. And the Wincest shipper in me sees Sam as viewing Castiel and Benny as romantic rivals. And I say this as someone who really really really wants Destiel to go canon.

Yeah, I do think that Sam has an understanding that Dean would never pick 'a girl' over him. I mean, even Soulless!Sam knew that Dean and Lisa would be doomed the second Sam showed up again on his doorstep. He gets more insecure of Cas and Benny because he does view them as potential replacements for him (which the siren episode did code in subtextully romantic/sexual ways).
