Let's see, in the past week we had a blizzard, got Nico evaluated by members of a feeding team at Easter Seals, and my computer died ( Read more... )

I'm glad you have learned what is going on.
Osce spent two years eating nothing but scrambled eggs for protein. I was always a little stressed trying to keep the other food groups represented. Still am now I think on it. :)

It sucks to know it isn't right but not what you can do about it, or if doing anything is even an option.:P

What a great evaluation. It brings so much context and understanding to the problem. I'm glad there are specific aids and therapies that are likely to help.

I'm also glad to hear the specific good things about Easter Seals.

Hugs all around. I wish Ellie were here to see what more than twice 20" looks like. :-)

You'd lose her.:) She go head first into a drift just like she did here and never be seen again until spring melt.

Yay! Did they recommend doing mechanical soft/pureed until they get him developed to where he needs to be for more regular foods to work? My sister in law noted (with surprise, to my amusement) that pureed foods taste...just like the foods you put in the blender and pureed. I kind of wondered what else they might possibly taste like, but I can understand it- they look so bland and flavorless, it's hard to imagine that they're not! I'm just wondering if you encouraging him to develop a taste for the flavors will help or hinder in the long run if you were to puree/grind foods that are at the table for the rest of you. Did they say anything about that? I'm not recommending it- just asking, as I haven't worked with a Down's kid of his age previously.

They did not, but they did talk about taking the foods he likes and changing them to various forms, rather than working with foods he doesn't like and changing them.

We do pretty well with fruit/veggie juice/smoothies, so long as they are 50% apple. They just $$$

David answered but I have to mention something. Almost universally, parent's of children who have special needs prefer to have their children called "Child with X condition" rather than "X condition's child". Nico is a child with Down Syndrome but he is first a child.

It's one of my peeves. His physical therapist does it and it makes me crazy.

We can not say enough good things about them. Today I received the nutritionist's (just her, not the other therapist) final report in the mail. We just had the appointment on Thursday. So focused and fast.
