The Sea After a Storm: Chapter Sixty-Eight
Previously on The Sea After a Storm: Dr. Martha Jones of UNIT and the Torchwood team began a joint inquiry into a spate of unexplained deaths…

After interviewing the survivor of the latest attack, a woman named Marie Thomas, Owen and Martha hypothesised that they killings were being done as a kind of cleansing; the ammonium hydroxide they'd found in the bloodstreams of the victims wiping out evidence. Jack directed Owen and Martha to keep working on the medical side of the investigation, assigning Gwen and Ianto the criminal aspects while Tosh was asked to keep plugging away at the missing medical records.

Ianto immediately delved into the Archives, looking for anything that matched the pertinent keywords of the current case: ammonium hydroxide, toxic shock, deleted medical records, etc. He found a few references that looked promising and headed down to the vaults with a list of files, only to be called back up by Tosh moments later.

"Ianto, the police have found another body in Heath Park. From the initial reports it's got all the hallmarks of the other attacks."

Ianto tapped his comm. "I'll get Gwen, head out there now."

Gwen met him at the top of the stairs, anxiously tossing the SUV keys between her hands. He grabbed his coat and followed her to the garage without a word.

"Christ, when did the sun come up?" Gwen asked as she steered the SUV out of the garage.

Ianto glanced at his watch. "About an hour and a half ago," he replied. She gave him a dirty look and he flushed slightly. "Sorry, bad habit. So what do we know?"

"Not much," Gwen admitted reluctantly. "Tosh heard the description of the body and figured we better check it out. Here, plug this into the GPS," she requested, handing him a scribbled note. There were a few minutes of silence as they wound north through the city and then Gwen yawned widely. "God, these overnighters just kill me. I don't know about you, but I could stand a bite of breakfast," she added.

Ianto nodded, agreeing with both sentiments. "Good idea. We can grab something for everyone on the way back."

"Great."

They were waved through to the crime scene, pulling up easily to the tent which had clearly been erected to keep the rain from ruining evidence.

"What have you got?" Gwen asked the officer who stepped up to meet the car.

Ianto grabbed the evidence kit from the SUV and followed.

"Body was found early this morning. Caucasian male, early twenties," he informed them.

"Okay, thanks."

Ianto set the kit down as he knelt on one side of the body, Gwen on the other side, ready to check the boy's eyeball for signs of puncture.

"Who is he?" she asked the officer as she gently pushed the boy's eyelid back.

"Barry Leonard," the policeman said laconically. "Student. Doctor said it looked like -"

"Toxic shock," Gwen finished, glancing over at Ianto. She gave him a nod and then paused for a second. Shifting slightly so she blocked the officer's view, she carefully closed the boy's eyes and patted his cheek before reaching across to Ianto.

"Owen and Martha'll want a blood sample, I'm sure," she said brusquely, trying to regain her composure. "Anything else you can think of?"

Ianto opened the kit and handed Gwen a long syringe with a sample bottle and shook his head as he said in a low voice, "You've seen the puncture and the blood can confirm the presence of ammonium hydroxide. If it's not there?" He shook his head. "Well, then we can remove him from the pattern, but I'm guessing they'll find it."

"Me, too," Gwen muttered, capping off the sample tube and passing everything back to Ianto who neatly stored the sample and packaged the syringe for disposal back at the Hub. She stood up and brushed off her knees. "Thanks," she said their escort. "I think we have everything we need."

"All right, then," the officer said amiably, walking them back to the SUV without further comment.

Gwen and Ianto stopped to pick up some breakfast - a few pastries and some breakfast baps, nothing fancy and all portable - and headed back to the Hub where Ianto made a fresh pot of coffee. Everyone grabbed something from the bag and a cup of coffee and then went right back to work.

Ianto gave Tosh a copy of the police report Gwen had asked for before they left the crime scene and within moments she'd confirmed in frustrated tones that Barry Leonard's medical records had also been irretrievably wiped. Gwen nodded thoughtfully when Ianto relayed this info and then took the blood sample to Owen and Martha for testing while Tosh attempted, yet again, to recover anything from the deleted medical files.

"What do you think of her?" Tosh asked after a long silence, not looking away from her monitor.

"Gwen?" Ianto asked, glancing at the doorway Gwen had disappeared through earlier.

"No, Doctor Martha Jones," she clarified crisply.

"She seems like a decent sort," Ianto said cautiously. "She might be UNIT, but I don't think you have anything to worry about, Tosh."

Tosh looked up at him, confusion written across her face. "What does UNIT... oh. Oh, I hadn't even thought about that," she said, looking surprised. "I was thinking more about how... other people might feel about her."

"Ahh," Ianto said, suddenly understanding. "Other people being Owen?"

Tosh nodded, looking back at her monitor and letting her hair swing down to hide her face.

"Tosh," Ianto said gently. He let his hand rest on her shoulder. "Have you said anything to him since the flowers and the note?"

She just shook her head.

He gave her a little squeeze. "Try again," he suggested.

"Now? With her here? No way." Tosh shook her head. "He doesn't see..." She gave a short, bitter laugh. "I was going to say he doesn't see me like that but he doesn't really see me at all. I'm just part of the team, another computer to get info from and now I'm failing at that, too!"

"Tosh, come on. You know Owen is -"

His mobile chose that rather inconvenient moment to ring in his pocket. He grimaced and flipped it open, noting that Jack still had his phone forwarded to Ianto's from the other night when he'd let the battery die.

"Ianto Jones," he answered.

"I'm looking for Captain Harkness," an official-sounding voice said over the line.

"I'm his assistant," Ianto said, making a face at Tosh. "Can I take a message?"

"He asked us to contact him immediately if there was any change in Marie Thomas' condition. She's had a seizure. We're not sure of the details yet, but wanted Captain Harkness to know right away."

"Thank you, we'll have someone there as soon as we can," Ianto promised and ended the call. He tapped his comm to activate the Hub-wide intercom and said, "Martha? Call from the hospital. Marie's had some sort of seizure."

A few moments later, Martha came racing through the Hub and up the stairs to the hothouse. "Thanks, Ianto!" she called as she passed by.

Tosh raised her eyebrows and put on her glasses, turning back to her monitor. "She's chock full of energy, isn't she?" she snarked and started typing again, her fingers hitting the keys with extra force.

Ianto sighed. "Anything?" he asked, deciding that focusing on the case would probably be best for the moment.

"Barry Leonard's address at the University," she said. She hit a few more keys and then added, "Sent to your phone."

He felt it buzz in his pocket and nodded his thanks. "Gwen and I will check it out while the other's see about Marie."

"And I'll stay here, being useless," Tosh muttered.

Ianto reached out to her, but she hunched over her keyboard and hid behind her hair again, so he settled for tapping the back of her chair as a sort of goodbye and went to find Gwen.
