The Sea After a Storm: Chapter Seventy
Previously on The Sea After a Storm: The team discovers the existence of the Pharm, a medical research facility that might responsible for the string of deaths they've been investigating...

Tosh and Ianto left Martha and Gwen to their discussion of the relative merits of Reset (and whether it might be possible to use the discovery to manufacture a safe version of the drug) and got back to work. Ianto arranged for some lunch to be delivered in about an hour, hoping Jack and Owen would be back by then. He tried to engage Tosh in conversation, picking up where they'd left off earlier, but she shut him down. He sighed and left her alone. She clearly didn't want to discuss Owen at the moment so he kept his comments short and related to the case only.

While Tosh started poking around the Pharm's computer systems, Ianto did some more in-depth research on the company itself. Earlier, he'd only had a few moments to pull together the basics for the meeting; now he dug deeper, looking for anything and everything that might help.

Owen and Jack returned from their outing with little good news and a lot of bad. Apparently the security systems, the armed guards and barbed wire were protecting, in Jack's words, "the highest concentration of alien life forms this side of the Rift."

"So what are we thinking?" Gwen asked. "Are they using the aliens as test subjects?"

Martha and Owen shook their heads simultaneously. "No," Martha explained. "Wouldn't be practical. The point of test subjects is to determine how humans will respond to drugs. Mice and monkeys are a starting point; aliens would be useless."

"I think that's where they're getting their award-winning research breakthroughs," Jack said. "It wouldn't be the first time some technological jump came from alien tech, or in this case, the aliens themselves. I don't know if it's some sick partnership or what. We've got to figure out exactly what they're up to." He stepped closer to Tosh's workstation, looking over her shoulder as she worked.

Tosh finally gave up when the 'ACCESS DENIED' screen came up yet again. "I can't hack in there, Jack. And if I keep on trying with a brute-force approach, they'll know they're under attack."

Ianto could hear the frustration in Tosh's voice across the Hub.

Jack sighed. "An alien life form is preying on the human bloodstream. I need a way in there."

Ha! Ianto thought triumphantly as computer finished its search. "Tosh!" he called from his workstation. "I've got the results of that research." He pressed the button on his computer to send the images to all available monitors. "On the screens now."

Jack hurried back to look at the monitor with Tosh. After a few screens of info flashed, Tosh caught on to Ianto's idea.

"Ianto, that's brilliant! They're in the market for volunteers," she said loudly as Martha and Owen came up from the med bay.

"That's understandable, given their wastage rate," Jack said with disgust.

Gwen looked up from the monitor at her workstation. "Then one of us goes in undercover."

Jack shook his head. "No, we don't know enough about the workings of that place. Too many things could go wrong."

"Unless you were to put a medic in there," Martha pointed out. "Someone who knew what to look for?"

Owen looked intrigued, but then frowned. "Yeah, but I can't do it. They know me now, don't they."

Martha looked over at Owen in exasperation. "I know it's hard to believe, Owen, but I wasn't thinking of you."

Ianto smothered a grin at that and noticed Gwen doing the same as she looked up to Jack for his reaction.

Jack's reaction was a big, fat negative. He pulled his hands out of his pockets and set them on his hips. "No way," he said firmly.

"Come on, Jack, I've been in worse places and you know it," Martha countered.

Something unspoken passed between Martha and Jack, Ianto could feel it all the way over at his workstation. He watched Jack as he glanced around at each of the other team members, gauging their reactions. Eventually he gave Martha a small smile.

"Okay," he agreed. "Gwen, look through what Ianto's dug up and pull the schematics and blue prints, if you please. Martha will also need some new identification. Ianto?"

"On it, sir."

"Can't have you going in there flying the UNIT flag, can we?"

Martha laughed at that, breaking some of the tension between her and Jack.

"Tosh, communications, please," Jack continued. "Something more subtle than our usual comms."

Ianto headed up to the Tourist Office where he kept his forgery materials. It was a handy talent that he'd developed in the archives of Torchwood One as an unintended side-effect of learning document authentication. He cobbled together a simple driving licence for Martha while keeping an ear out for the lunch delivery. A short while later, armed with a fresh ID and a large bag of sandwiches, Ianto headed back down to the Hub.

He set up the lunches and then snagged an egg and tomato on rye for himself before calling everyone in to eat.

"Oooh, thanks, pet!" Gwen said as she helped herself to a Coronation Chicken sandwich and a Greek wrap. "I was just about to succumb to eating the bag of crisps in my desk."

"The bag of crisps?" Ianto teased, knowing that her bottom drawer was chock full of junk food.

Gwen made a face at him. "Ha bloody ha. Here."

He grinned at her and took the papers she held out to him. "What are these?"

"Map of the Pharm," she said, unwrapping her sandwich. "I've marked what I could, maybe Jack or Owen have more info from what they saw while they were there?"

"Good idea," he said. He grabbed a New Yorker and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps for Jack and headed up to Jack's office. "Lunch, sir," he said, setting the sandwich and crisps on top of the report Jack was reading.

"Huh? Oh, thanks, Ianto. Mmmm, my favourite," Jack said with a grateful smile as he read the label on the sandwich.

"I know. Do you think you can add anything to these plans?" he asked as he spread the maps out on the end of Jack's desk, well away from the food.

Jack took a bite of his sandwich and stood to join Ianto by the maps. "Here," he said thickly around a mouthful of beef. "That's where the biggest fences were and where my readings were the strongest. I think that's where they're keeping the aliens. This is the main house."

They ate their meal while Jack pointed at different areas and Ianto filled in the info on the plans. Jack only needed one hand to hold his sandwich, so his other hand was free to distract Ianto from his notations. For a while it merely rested on Ianto's back whenever he bent to write something on the map, but then it got bolder, ruffling his hair, stroking his shoulders, slipping downward to -

"Jack!"

"What?" Jack asked innocently as if he hadn't just goosed Ianto.

"I'm trying to work," Ianto said in pained tones that were wholly put on for show.

"It's this suit." Jack always had an excuse. "You know how I feel about you in red."

Ianto grinned. "I know. It's exactly how I feel about you in navy blue."

"Clearly not exactly," Jack pointed out. "You haven't tried to grope me once today."

With a dirty chuckle, Ianto let the pencil fall from his hand. He swiftly turned and, half-sitting on the desk, he cupped Jack's cock and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Better?" he asked.

Jack's eyes drifted closed and he pushed forward into Ianto's hand. "Almost," he whispered.

Ianto glanced through the window behind Jack's desk and, after discerning that everyone else was otherwise occupied, leant in to brush his lips over Jack's.

"Better?" he murmured.

"Hmmm... not quite..."

Giving into the inevitable gladly, Ianto stood and pressed his full length against Jack, wrapping his free arm around Jack's waist as he gave him a long, soft kiss. Jack moaned and clutched at Ianto, pulling him even closer as he deepened the kiss. After a blissful minute, they broke the kiss, stepping apart while Ianto straightened his suit.

"Tonight," Jack said roughly, his eyes dark with desire.

"Tonight?" Ianto replied lightly, the tone belying his pounding heart.

Jack nodded. "Tonight I'll show you what I want to do to you whenever you wear red."

Ianto gave his tie another tug; suddenly it seemed a little tight. "As you wish," he said softly, making Jack smile.

He picked up the maps and walked out of the office, giving his walk a little more sway that it usually had.
