The Sea After a Storm: Chapter Seventy-One
Previously on The Sea After a Storm: The team decided to send Martha undercover into the Pharm...
Once past Jack's door, Ianto gave himself a mental shake and went to find Martha in the med bay.
He cleared his throat as he came down the stairs, alerting Martha to his presence. "Okay," he said as he stepped over to the table which was thankfully empty of dead bodies for once. "These are the plans for the Pharm's buildings."
Martha joined him, looking down at the papers as he unfolded them.
"From what Jack and Owen saw, they reckon that the main house contains Copley's office, medical research suites, and the accommodation for the clinical trial subjects."
"What about the buildings at the rear?" Martha asked, pointing to the map.
"Restricted area, fenced off, armed security. Jack thinks that's where the readings of alien life forms came from."
Martha grinned. "Cool."
Ianto looked down at Martha, his hands on his hips. "But you don't need to go anywhere near there," he cautioned.
"Spoilsport," Martha accused and then walked back over to her briefcase.
Ianto allowed himself a smile at Martha's pluck before continuing. "The first thing you need to do is get yourself accepted as a clinical trials subject. Don't try too hard, don't draw too much attention to yourself."
Martha raised her head for a moment. "Be invisible," she said. "I can do that."
Something in her voice, even with her back turned to him, made Ianto want to ask her about everything that happened while she was away with Jack and the Doctor. He squashed that impulse, however, and kept focussed on the task at hand. "Once you're in, we need you to gain access to the Pharm's IT systems, close down the system firewalls and security protocols. That way Tosh can gain access to the files and see what they're really up to."
"Industrial espionage." Martha closed her case and turned to face him again. "It's very civilised."
"Once you've done that, get out," Ianto said seriously. "Don't take any unnecessary risks." Or Jack will go ballistic, he thought.
"Understood," Martha said, rolling her eyes.
Ianto smiled. "Cool."
"So," Martha said as Ianto began folding up the map. "Jack asked me if I could get you a UNIT cap to wear."
Ianto froze, a thousand thoughts popping into his mind at once, the first and foremost being WHAT?! He realized Martha was staring at him with a knowing look on her face.
"Did he?" he burst out with a shaky grin. "Well... red... is my colour," he added inanely, making a break for the exit.
Martha was grinning now. "So am I right thinking that you and he... ?" She raised her eyebrows and wiggled her nose at him.
Ianto paused on the steps, at a loss for words for the second time in ten seconds. "We..." Words were flying around his brain, none of them could capture everything he and Jack were to each other except for one, and there was no way he was saying that word to Martha before he said it to Jack. "Dabble," he finished lamely, his voice much higher than usual.
"Yeah?" Martha asked, sounding impressed.
Ianto gave her a smile and echoed her with a confirming, "Yeah," in a low voice, much closer to his normal tones.
Martha's grin widened until she looked like a little girl who's just had the existence of Santa Clause confirmed. "So... what's his 'dabbling' like?" she asked.
"Innovative," Ianto said, feeling much more in control of both himself and the situation now.
"Really?"
He raised his eyebrows. "Bordering on the avant garde," he said, seriously whist laughing on the inside.
"Wow!" Martha sounded fascinated and a little jealous.
"Oh, yeah," Ianto said. He let his eyes drift to the side for a moment, thinking of a few times when Jack actually had been a little avant garde. He realised Martha was still staring at him. "Hmm," he said, bringing himself back to the present. "So, shall we get your cover story sorted?" he asked brightly.
"Absolutely," Martha replied, following him up the steps.
They met Jack and Tosh in Jack's office. Ianto pulled a Torchwood evidence bag containing Martha's new driving licence from his pocket.
"Fake ID. First name Samantha, thought the Jones would be safe."
Martha took the bag from him with a quick smile. "OK, how do I stay in touch?" she asked.
"Communication's very tricky," Tosh explained. "The whole place could be wired. We don't want you chatting away to us and being overheard."
"But I want to monitor you at all times," Jack broke in, leaning forward in his chair.
"So?" Martha prompted.
Tosh handed her a box with a set of oversized lenses.
"I don't need contact lenses." Martha sounded slightly confused.
"You need these," Tosh assured her. "Come on, I'll show you. They're a little tricky to get in the first time."
Tosh lead Martha out into the Hub. Before Jack could rise and follow them, Ianto picked up a folder from Jack's desk and smacked him in the back of the head.
"Ow!" Jack exclaimed. "What was that for?"
"A UNIT cap?" Ianto fumed in mock anger. "What the hell were you thinking?"
A look of comprehension dawned on Jack's face and he grinned up at Ianto, leaning back in his chair. "What? You look good in red. Wasn't I just saying that?"
"And just what would I be doing while I was wearing it? I swear, Jack, first naked hide and seek, and stopwatch games, and then strip hockey -"
"Strip shinty," Jack interrupted. "It sounds better if they both start with 's'. And what's wrong with having a little fun? Are you saying you didn't enjoy strip shinty?" Jack stood up and pulled Ianto to him, kissing his neck when Ianto turned his face away.
"I still have bruises," Ianto huffed.
"Poor baby," Jack crooned. "Want me to kiss them better?" he offered, nuzzling Ianto and kissing his ear.
Ianto snorted. "Now's probably not the best time," he said dryly allowing Jack to capture his lips in a quick kiss.
"Jack," Owen called from the centre of the Hub.
"See?" Ianto said. He gave Jack a smile and another kiss. "Tonight?" he murmured, unconsciously repeating their exchange from earlier.
"Tonight."
"Jack!" Owen bellowed again.
They headed out to the Hub to find Martha blinking rapidly, trying to get used to the large contacts.
"Okay?" Owen asked her and then stepped back when she nodded.
"Oh, I'm a camera!" Martha exclaimed when she saw exactly what she was seeing being broadcast onto a nearby monitor.
Jack grinned and pointed at her. "As Chris Isherwood once said to me when we were cruising the Kurfurstendamnm."
Owen and Ianto rolled their eyes, whilst Tosh completely ignored Jack's comment, reaching over to her keyboard. "And we... can... text," she said typing out 'U LOOK WE C'.
"Wow!" Martha said, marvelling for a moment.
Tosh continued explaining. "Power comes from the body heat, so they only work when you're wearing them."
"Yeah," Owen said with a smirk. "So you have to wear them everywhere."
Martha was unfazed by this observation. "Well, I'll be doing some things with my eyes shut, then," she parried, making Owen grin at her.
Ianto glanced at Tosh who was frowning again.
Jack tapped Martha's shoulder, distracting her from Owen. "In case of an emergency, we can speak directly to you."
Tosh stepped up again. "The lens will communicate with your sensory neuroreceptors, bypasses the auditory system."
Martha was blinking and touching the edges of her eyes, clearly trying to get used to the contacts. "But can't these signals be intercepted?" she asked.
Jack and Tosh glanced over to Ianto who explained, "Alien technology which exploits a solution to the EPR paradox."
"Oh, quantum entanglement of remote particles." Martha nodded at Ianto in complete understanding. "Okay, cool."
"Yeah," Ianto agreed.
Jack grinned. "Did I mention she was brilliant? Martha, I want to get you into the Pharm close to the end of the day. Hopefully we'll get you accepted as a trials subject and then they'll all close down for the night, giving you time to get us into the system and then out as quickly as possible. So everyone take a few hours and get some rest. Be back here by five. Ianto, did you make any arrangements for Martha?"
"Yes, sir, she's at the St. David's."
"Great. Doctor Jones, if you will accompany me?"
"Gladly, Captain Harkness," Martha replied, taking Jack's proffered arm.
Tosh left shortly after Jack and Martha, but Owen refused to go home. He called dibs on the sofa and stretched out with his jacket under his head for a pillow. Ianto opted for a more comfortable resting place and climbed down the ladder to Jack's bunk. He shot a quick text to Gwen, who had gone home to see Rhys for a few minutes, and let her know that she actually had the afternoon to spend with him. Then he took off his jacket and waistcoat and loosened his tie before lying down on Jack's bed. He was asleep seconds after his head hit the pillow.
