The Sea After a Storm: Chapter One Hundred
Previously on The Sea After a Storm: Jack and Gwen are chasing something nasty that fell through the rift whilst Tosh and Ianto race to help them...
Even though traffic was lighter on the way back to town - apparently everyone was trying to get out of Cardiff for the weekend rather than the reverse - Jack and Gwen had the situation wrapped up before Tosh and Ianto arrived.
"It's down," Owen reported over the comms. "Apparently it's a shape shifter as well as a people eater. They're bringing the body back now."
"Oh, good." Tosh breathed a sigh of relief. "Any other fatalities?"
"Not that they've found. It bit Gwen but Jack shot it before it could get more than a nibble."
"Is she okay?" Tosh asked, sharing a worried look with Ianto.
"Says she's fine. Jack's bringing her back here so I can wrap it up."
"And dose her with a fuck-ton of antibiotics," Ianto suggested dryly.
"Already on it," Owen agreed.
"We're almost to the Hub," Ianto reported. "See you in a few."
When Tosh and Ianto finally arrived, everyone else was in Jack's office. Jack was making notes on their pursuit while Owen bandaged up Gwen's arm.
"At least it's white," Gwen said glumly as she watched Owen work. "It'll go, yeah?"
"You can probably switch to a regular plaster tomorrow," Owen reassured her.
"What happened on your end?" Jack asked, looking up from his paper.
"Nothing," Ianto said with a heavy sigh. "It must've been a malfunction."
"I'm going to run a diagnostic on the rift monitor right now."
Jack shook his head. "It can wait, Tosh. It's Friday night and we've all got plans tomorrow," he said with a quick smile at Gwen. "The shifter is on ice so I say we all call it a night."
"Yes, oooh, I'm that late!" Gwen cried, glancing down at her watch.
"The strippers will wait," Owen said. "Now, keep the alcohol intake down. Any nausea or vomiting or diarrhoea -"
"Owen!"
"- could be side effects of either the bite or the antibiotics cocktail. Drink lots of water. Maybe grab a yoghurt. Call me if you experience anything out of the ordinary, got it?"
"Yeah, yeah, can I go now?"
"Fine," Owen said. He stripped off his latex gloves and gave her a grin. "Have fun."
"Thanks! See you tomorrow after I'm Mrs. Rhys Williams!" Gwen called, practically flying out of the room.
"She's changing her name?" Owen asked blankly.
"She doesn't seem any worse for wear," Ianto observed with a chuckle.
Jack shrugged. "There wasn't anything in the shifter's mouth to indicate venom or any odd biology other than really big teeth. Nothing to suggest it was more than a physical bite."
Owen gestured over his shoulder with his thumb. "You sure you don't want me to do the autopsy tonight, Jack?"
"Nah." Jack stood up and stretched his back. "We've had a long couple of days. Torchwood can take a break for the weekend. See you at the wedding."

Ianto was snuggled against Jack's back keeping his nose warm in the early February morning chill when a phone rang a few minutes after seven.
"Yours or mine?" he asked sleepily.
Jack grunted and then Ianto heard him grabbing for the phone on the bedside table. "Harkness," he said.
Ianto smiled. He could tell from the way Jack answered the phone that he hadn't even opened his eyes to check the display. The smile faded into a groan as Ianto recognised Owen's strident tones on the other end of the call.
"She what?" Jack asked. He rolled onto his back, dislodging Ianto as he pressed the speaker button and held the phone out so they could both hear.
"I don't have any details, she just babbled on about how I said to call about something out of the ordinary and how it couldn't possibly be what it is and then she started hyperventilating. I had to promise to be right over to get her calm her down even a little so I'm gonna need a hand. I don't do hysterical women. Especially not before nine a.m."
Gwen? Ianto mouthed at Jack.
Jack nodded. "I'm sure it's just cold feet or something. I'll meet you there and we can talk her down... or help her run or whatever. Ow!" Jack rubbed his shoulder where Ianto had hit him.
"Right, see you there."
Jack clicked off the phone and then glared at Ianto. "Ow," he said again.
Ianto snorted and then kissed the spot where his fist had landed. "There, all better. Quit trying to sabotage Gwen's wedding just because you hate them."
"I don't hate Gwen and Rhys," Jack protested.
Rolling his eyes, Ianto climbed out of bed and stretched his back. "Weddings, Jack, you hate weddings and we both know it. What I don't know is why."
"It's a sexist, antiquated ritual. In my day back in the 51st Century - what?"
Ianto was laughing as he stepped into the bath and turned the shower on. He stuck his head back through the open door. "How you can sound exactly like a grumpy old man while talking about the distant future never fails to amuse me."
"I'll show you amused," Jack threatened as he lunged out of the bed.
Ianto just laughed again and ducked into the shower.

The sun was fully up about an hour later as Ianto parked his car and headed into the Hub alone. Tosh joined him not long after he arrived, carrying a garment bag with her.
"You look nice! My dress for the wedding," she explained as she hung up the bag and gestured to her casual clothes. "Didn't feel up to it this early. Have we heard anything about Gwen?"
Ianto shook his head and poured Tosh a cup of coffee. "Jack's of the opinion that she's just freaking out about the wedding, but I doubt that's it."
"I'm with you," Tosh said. "That woman is mad to tie the knot." Her phone binged as she was speaking. "Text from Owen... he says... oh no."
"What is it?"
She showed him the text: exo-bio insem. set up bio-xenic microtron. back soon. thx O
"Insem? Oh, God, you don't think he means... insemination, do you?" Ianto asked with horror in his voice.
Tosh looked just as worried. "Can't imagine what else it would be especially not if he's asking for the bio-xenic microtron. So Gwen's pregnant? With... something?"
"Rhys is gonna kills us all," Ianto stated flatly.
Tosh nodded in silent agreement.
They were still sitting there in shock a few minutes later when Tosh's phone binged a second time.
Never mind - will do it after wedding. thx O
They stared blankly at each other for another long moment after Tosh finished reading the text.
"Maybe it's isn't so bad, then?" Tosh asked, trying to sound hopeful.
Ianto's response was to go make more coffee.
He was in the back of Jack's office when Jack and Owen returned a little while later.
"How is she?" he heard Tosh ask as he made his way to the centre area of the Hub.
"She's going ahead with the wedding," Owen said.
"Which is fine," Jack added. "As long as she doesn't go into labour at the altar. Rhys might forgive her going down the aisle pregnant, but not giving birth to a razor-toothed monster that eats half his family."
"Could that happen?" Ianto asked from behind Jack.
Owen answered. "Well, look, the pregnancy's advanced and we're not familiar with the species."
"Which is why you, Owen, need to open up the guy with the teeth and make sure there's no surprises."
"I'm on it."
"Tosh," Jack continued in full-on Captain mode. "You’ve got an early pass to the wedding. Keep an eye on Gwen. Ianto!" Jack turned to give Ianto a little smile.
"Jack."
"Gwen's going to need a new wedding dress… Bigger," he clarified.
Ianto nodded and went back to Jack's office to fetch his keys. He realised he had no idea where to go, so he stopped at the extra workstation in the office and logged on. He hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to search for wedding dress or maternity. He shrugged and just typed it all in. He called up the Hub security scan and made notes of Gwen's rough measurements and then added the names and address of the first couple of shops that came up on the search engine.
"Just another day at Torchwood," he muttered to himself as he returned his notepad to his pocket.
