The Sea After a Storm: Chapter One Hundred-Four
Previously on The Sea After a Storm: Gwen's wedding was interrupted by a shape-shifting alien intent on retrieving the egg inside her...
Ianto headed back to the chapel after carefully locking up the SUV. The last thing they needed was the Nostrovite helping herself to a high-tech get-away car. He didn't go into the hotel, opting to patrol the outside of the large glass windows that ran along the length of the chapel. Tosh spotted him and left Owen to deal with the bewildered wedding guests, joining Ianto on the walkway.
"We located Gwen and Rhys so Jack's gone to join them," he said as she walked up. "Figure the Nostrovite will show up there sooner rather than later no matter who she's impersonating now."
"Makes sense. Did he take his Really Big Gun?" Tosh asked with a roll of her eyes.
"Any excuse to pull that thing out."
Tosh grinned at him. "I'll let that one go," she said.
They shared a chuckle and then refocused on the grounds. They were still patrolling, guns drawn, when they heard a muffled explosion from somewhere close by. Tosh and Ianto exchanged glances.
"I really hope that was Jack's big gun."
Ianto just nodded.
They didn't have to wait long to find out. A few minutes after the boom, Gwen and Rhys appeared around the corner of one of the outbuildings. Both seemed fine although Gwen kept tripping over her now too long dress since she was no longer carrying around the Nostrovite egg. Behind them, with his Really Big Gun resting casually on his shoulder, came Jack with his trademark Harkness grin firmly in place. Tosh ran to them while Ianto clicked on his comms to let Owen know that all was well.
"We're getting married right this bloody minute," Rhys was saying when Ianto joined the group.
"But we're covered in alien... goop!" Gwen protested.
Rhys swiped at his face and shrugged. "Don't care," he said simply.
Gwen giggled.
"Come on," Tosh said, tugging Gwen along with her as the wedding guests rushed into the garden, all chattering about what had happened. "We'll get you cleaned up best we can." They were joined by both Gwen and Rhys' mums, each with a handkerchief in hand, fussing over their children.
Owen jogged up and Jack filled them in on what had happened in the barn as they slowly ushered everyone back into the chapel yet again. Ianto wished he could've seen Rhys going at the Nostrovite with a chain saw.
"Not sure if even that would've worked on that crazy bitch, so it was a good job finding them when we did," Jack said, giving Ianto a nod. "So Rhys got the egg, I got mama and they get their happily ever after after all."
After having a buttonhole pinned on each of them by a cheerful older woman, Ianto led the way down the aisle to a row near the front of the chapel. They left one seat open for Tosh, who joined them at the last minute just before Rhys took his place at the front.
This time the wedding went off perfectly. As soon as Gwen and Rhys were officially married, the happy couple headed up to the bridal suite to change out of their Nostrovite-blood-stained clothes and Jack sent Owen and Ianto to take care of the remains of the murdered groomsman.
"We'll do a full cleanup after the reception," Jack said quietly, giving them both a meaningful look and handing over a room key. "But this can't wait. I locked the door but I don't want some overeager maid finding him and interrupting Gwen's night."
So once again, Ianto headed down to the SUV. He grabbed their full stock of Retcon, a heavy plastic body bag, two disposable rain ponchos and extra gloves. He and Owen made quick work of the unfortunate victim, both muttering words of thanks that the Nostrovite hadn't done the same to Tosh. Together, they managed to get the body down to the SUV without being spotted by any guests or hotel staff. Ianto engaged the cooler compartment and they stored the body bag for transport back to the Hub before joining the party.

After the madness of the wedding ceremony, the wedding reception was blessedly free of any drama. The food was excellent, the drinks were plentiful, the bride was radiant in her original wedding gown and the music was more eclectic than any party in history. Rhys started the night off with a short speech thanking everyone for their understanding and cooperation during the "incident" and closed with a moving tribute to his mate Mervyn who was currently occupying the cooler in the SUV. Since Mervyn had been the designated DJ, Rhys invited everyone to take a turn at the music, playing whatever they wanted.
Ianto was at the DJ station late in the evening, when he noticed Owen lurking around the table.
"D'you want a turn?" he offered.
Owen shook his head. "Nah, not really my thing."
Ianto started playing You Do Something to Me by Paul Weller. He saw Owen staring over at the Torchwood table where Jack and Tosh were sitting and hid a smile.
"Good song for dancing," he said casually.
"Huh? Yeah, I guess."
Ianto rolled his eyes. "Go ask her to dance already."
"What? No, I mean, I... yeah? You think?"
"I think."
He watched as Owen made his way over to Tosh and asked her to dance. His invitation was immediately accepted and the happy look on Tosh's face as Owen put his arms around her made Ianto's mouth curve into a smile and his eyes to seek out Jack. His lover was getting up from the table and moving to the dance floor as well. Ianto watched as Jack approached Gwen and Rhys and cut in on their dance. The song was almost over when a girl of about sixteen came up to the DJ table.
"Can I please play the next song?" she asked politely.
Ianto's eyes darted to Jack and Gwen. "Absolutely," he said, handing over the headphones. "You know what to do?"
"Oh, please," she said in that world-weary teenage way. "My sound system at home is way more complicated."
Ianto left the music in her, apparently, expert hands and moved through the dancers.
"...and best of all, he really loves you," Jack was saying as he approached.
"I know," Gwen said contentedly.
"May I... erm..." Ianto cleared his throat to interrupt.
Gwen and Jack stepped apart, Gwen looking flustered for a moment. "Yes," she said, reaching for Ianto, assuming he meant to dance with her.
But Ianto only had eyes for Jack. He cut in between them, facing Jack with a smile, leaving Gwen to find her husband. Jack rolled his eyes at Gwen's cluelessness and then happily pulled Ianto against him.
"Thank you," he whispered into Ianto's ear a moment later.
"For what?"
"All your hard work today, rescuing me from the bride, lots of things."
"You looked a little lost in thought when you were dancing with Gwen," Ianto said softly.
"Yeah... thinking about other weddings... other brides."
"Anyone I know?"
"Not the bride... you're pretty familiar with the groom."
Ianto jerked slightly, wanting to pull back so he could see Jack's face, but Jack just pulled him closer and ran his hand over Ianto's back.
"It was over a century ago. Part of why it seems like I hate weddings. I'll tell you about her... someday. I promise. Right now, I don't want to think about her anymore. I don't want to think about anyone else at all. I just want to dance with you."
Ianto nodded, resting his cheek against Jack's and letting his eyes close.
