Well... I don't know. It started up last summer when I took out the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe guide from the Mile End library, and, opening to page 631, I was entranced. Anyway, part of me asks myself that question all the time, especially since I've been to Europe 3 times, but the other continents, never. I think there's something there about the oldness and newness of it all. I want to see old wooden churches, but I want to hear stories of survival through insane regimes, I want to see these places as they're scurrying to get their act together to become recognised again. Or maybe I'm doing it for the beer.
Oh wow. If you get a chance, head down to tiraspol in transdniestr (in any guidebook it will probably be included under moldova). I hear it rocks... a the german i was hitching with moved there for a time, so i'll have to get some info out of her.
Are you heading through belgrade or sofia to get to romania? If you're ever undecided and need recs, lemme know.
I'm thinking of Moldova in transit between Romania and Odes(s)a, but the visa thing may be tough. The plan, so far, is to fly into Budapest (I just have my ticket to London right now), and take the train into Cluj-Napoca before heading to Maramures for a while. I'll want to go south through Bulgaria and eventually in Turkey, before ending up in ex-Yugo for the end of June. If the Moldova/Transdniestr/Odes(s)a thing works out, then I'll take the boat across the Black Sea into Istanbul and do the Turkey thing then, Bulgaria later. But this is way more than you need to know. They'll have wigs waiting there for me, non?
