The 9600GT's are a single slot card with small power requirements (charmaines old desktop has one) - and better performance than the 8800GT, 8800GTS.
9800GT is more of the same, but you're going from their "budget" card, to their "mainstream" card. So you'd see significant bumps in speed.
After that, you really want to look at a GTX 260.
Open your case, see if you can find a better number on the side of the PSU. Like I said, I'd be guessing 300-400w. Note the brand, and if it has a rating for 12V Amps...
i saw something about 12V. the GTX 260 has a minimum power requirement of 500W and the 9800GT has a minimum power requirement of 400W. Does this mean i'll need a new power supply even if mine is 300W?

Memory on the card means very little these days.
As far as Power Supplies go, a decent 400-500w one is plenty to run any single card.
I'd say you have a 300 -> 400w noname brand one...
What do you want to play with the card?

I'm going to be using it for some of the new games coming out soon.
