Brief General History

Amarillo is not the man you want to go to with your problems. It isn't that he doesn't care- He does. He cares quite a lot for his brother and sister cities and his state and their country, but isn't inclined to offer assistance beyond advice often. This is especially true where his own people are concerned. His viewpoint is, he worked hard, he got them so far, holding their hands and nearly coddling them, from when Amarillo won the Potter country seat in 1893 to after World War II. He was tired of it and exhausted from his industrial efforts in war time, so he stepped back, allowing his people to act of their own accord more and more. Currently, he plays more of an advisory role, as opposed to his previous very serious hands on approach to his work.

With this new approach to life, parts of his personality besides "helicoptering guardian" came through. He's laid back, he puts more priority on just plain hard work instead of education, he's easygoing and accepting of change. After his name was changed from Oneida to Amarillo, he learned to put up with it and, eventually, enjoy it. He's changed from a serious man that cracked dangerously deep into overindulgence occasionally to a man that smiles easily and takes joys and pleasures as they come.

Being raised by Texas left a strong mark on him. His own sort of parenting style directed at his people was closely mimicked from how Amarillo saw Texas raising cities. Strict, closely watching, guiding and teaching and providing tirelessly. He even took after his big brother in his work with cattle and drilling, and spent many years toiling under the sun, trying to convince himself it was what he should be doing. Amarillo was constantly pushing himself to his limits, though he put on a smile like his brother's to hide how unhappy he was. It wasn't until he was pushed to physical and emotional exhaustion that he finally admitted to himself that he simply couldn't live that way. He backed off, and his city grew.  He became very self-aware following that, determined to not limit himself or his people in such a way with his behavior again. As such, he tries to interfere directly in official affairs only when necessary. He's always glad to offer advice and guidance though, to those who ask for it, and sometimes to those who don't. He carried them until they could walk, but now it's up to them to choose where they go.

This attitude is what he generally displays, but if he is especially fond of someone, he will do things for them to try to care for them.

He prefers to be called by his human name or a nickname rather than "Amarillo", yellow. It's a negative connotation to the word that he picked up from Texas but hasn't managed to shake, even if he's fully aware he's named for the prevalence of yellow wildflowers and soil in his area, rather than any reflection on how he behaves. Amarillo is one of the few cities that Texas does not call by their "official" name. Rather, he calls Amarillo "Rip" taken from his name at the inspiration of a nickname used by one of the Texas Rangers. Considering how much Amarillo tried to take after Texas, this has had a great effect on him.

His favorite song is, indeed, "Amarillo by Morning".

While he doesn't have a particular aversion to water, he's deathly afraid of drowning, so he's always careful around it.

He adapts easily to extreme heat or cold, after experiencing snowstorms and droughts just about every winter and summer of his life.
