In talking to my mother the other day I found out my baby cousin has just been diagnosed with diabetes. What makes a 5 year old pancreas just stop working? What about birthday cake and holiday breads and all the other traditional foods our italian/polish/irish families make

My 12 year old sister-in-law recently discovered she has Type 1 Diabetes. I think they had a bit of an idea all along because any kind of sweets made her break out in hives, though.

My dad had diabetes (because of his weight, but he doesn't have it anymore), and there are a ton of diabetic-friendly cookbooks out there! I know there are a lot of specific websites/blogs as well, so I'll send some your way if I see anything :)

It's difficult to deal with, but it's really great they caught it so early. My sister-in-law went to a special camp this summer for kids with type 1, and she really loved it! It helped her learn more about the disease and find other kids who are going through the same thing
