So I've had a lot of free time this semester. Grad school is quite weird. I feel like I've had it a little easier than others so far, but I'm sure that will change. The classwork doesn't take a longer amount of time, it just requires more complex, intense thinking than the stuff I learned in undergrad. The lectures are extremely emotionally ( Read more... )

I can't see any problem with doing a summer internship unless your advisor has some reason to believe that you won't finish "on time" (whatever that may mean in your situation) if you don't spend your summer working on your thesis project, but even then you could probably change their mind if an internship is what you really want. People in aerospace go work for NASA, NSA has summer internship programs for math/comp sci/operations management, I'd guess chem people go work for pharmaceutical companies, etc. Just make sure that you don't stick around doing thesis work unless you have funding for it.
