There's no trend in the disappearances or the circumstances regarding when people leave. Sometimes they know enough to put a notice on the network, but none of the ones I've found have anything about how they did manage to get back.

The highest level of returns seems to be right before new arrivals come in. General opinion seems to be that the barrier's weakest at that time, although I couldn't locate it to test that theory before the stream of newcomers stopped.

There doesn't seem to be a history of people petitioning the deities for escape, but it looks like a more viable option than locating the barrier.
